Book review dump of doom

Okay, I haven't caught up with book reviews since...before Lent? That can't be right. Well anyway, a long time. So I'm going to just do these at the speed of light and just get it out of the way. I'm not posting reviews of everything I've read since Lent because first of all I do, contrary to popular belief, have a life and secondly I can't even ( Read more... )

I've read up through the 10th Plum book, and it doesn't get any better. I gave up on the series when all the books started to run together in my head--if I can't tell the plots apart, then they're getting too formulaic! Plus, I really hate how Stephanie and Morelli never seem to grow up in their relationship at all--they're permanently stuck on immature, since the characters don't really age.

The Russel/Holmes books are AMAZING! I read them all as fast as I could at the beginning of the summer. (I read the last one in one night and stayed up until 5 AM). They only get better over time. King, in my opinion, can be classified in much the same way as Joss Whedon--a liberal who creates such convincing conservative characters (there's an amazing moment in one of the later books where everyone complains about how the newly-elected Labour government in England is going to let the Communists run wild!) that you really wonder how she can even be a liberal in the first place. I cannot recommend that series enough. Everyone I know who's read it loves it, from my mother and aunt, to my amazingly snarky AP World History teacher, to my brother's incredibly nerdy best friend.

Yeah, I have a hard time reading books when the main character needs to be smacked all of the time. I liked some of the secondary characters (the big guy that helped her buy her gun and bailed her out a couple times, frex) but not enough to make up for the fact that I really wanted to shake Stephanie most of the time. Gah.

I need to read more Laurie King. I have the second Russel book, I just haven't gotten to it, yet.

Speaking of...um...detective stories, have you read Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries? (not to spoil you, but I have a specific reason for asking in reference to this comment of yours.)
