Wow, go, you! I wish I could have stuck with the more hardcore version of what I was doing for a bit longer, but I feel like what I'm eating and how I'm eating aren't drastically different than ti was when I was being super healthy and exercising all the time. The gradual approach is nice because getting back on the horse, so to speak, isn' a huge thing; I'm just following the same path -- making sure I have a space for exercise every day for a month, then tracking what I eat for a month, then counting calories after that. Hopefully, it will be gradual and painless.

And i have a personal rule that I won't calorie-count for more than three months. I like to see it as a tuneup, not a lifestyle.

Thanks! :D I love the gradual approach so much. And I love the idea that you don't have to be in the most hardcore mode to still be doing good things for your nutrition, it's not all or nothing - like you say, it's a path, not a destination. You don't have to be doing everything all at once to be doing great things for your health, and the most important things have got fuck-all to do with weight itself. You're always an inspiration to me with your meal planning :D

Aww, thank you! I have to say, it's rare enough for me to manage a sane approach to a complicated problem that I am very proud of this one. \o/

That's wonderful. I'm really happy for you.

Reading about everything you've done was really interesting. Point 3 is really interesting. I'd love to hear more about how you did it. It's something I've just started trying to figure out and it's a really daunting process for me.

UGH I HATE NEW LIVEJOURNAL. I just typed this really long comment and LJ's terrible flash ate it. >:(

It was kind of rambly but it boiled down to: google everything! I googled ANYTHING that came across my radar and I didn't really know what it meant. There's so much out there that it can seem really overwhelming, but that also means that you can skim three articles on just about any topic and see if they agree with each other. I googled all kinds of things - "health benefits of fiber," "healthy fats," "complex carbohydrates," EVERYTHING. I also googled a lot of individual foods - "butternut squash nutrition" plus "butternut squash recipes" equaled a very delicious and informative week. I honestly just tried to ferret out every hole in my knowledge that I happened to stumble over.

Specific resources: My Plate has great basics, The Calorie Counter has nutrition facts for the kind of food that comes without labels, Livestrong has all kinds of random articles (along with some bullshit, of course). No single site really grabbed ( ... )

Thank you for the links. It's really nice to know there isn't one place to see. I don't feel like I'm trying to find the "right" site now. Now I have some good key words to look up. This is really helpfu for me.

I was wondering about your 30 minute fitness goal - how did that work out? I'm doing a diary to keep track of how I'm working out. Right now it's weight traing and cardio because they seemed the simpliest to start.

This is so awesome, and I'm super happy to hear that it was an unstressful and empowering change. \o/ I'm definitely going to take bits and pieces from this and try to incorporate it into my own life; I've been slowly but steadily changing my habits for the past eight months or so, not so much because I want to lose weight, but because I want to feel healthy. I'm still pretty terrible about cooking, though, so you've given me great ideas. :)

Thank you! :D :D :D I think that sounds super sensible and awesome. I remember a while after I commenced phase one, I noticed that my fingernails were stronger than they had ever been, just because I was eating so many more fruits and vegetables (in an attempt to fill my many lunch containers!) Healthy eating feels so wonderful completely separate from any weight loss intentions.

Cooking is such a hard piece of the puzzle, and I haven't been doing well at all with it this week. I try to keep a good balance between complicated cooking and easy cooking in my week, so if I'm making a main dish that requires effort, I'll have a really easy side like steamed broccoli or just whole grapes, and that makes things less daunting. (At first I kept stupidly planning weeks of meals that involved preparing two complex things for every single meal and snack. UGH.)
