I think Show *should* be greater than its fandom. That's the whole point, for me. The fandom should be dessert IMHO. And I love dessert as much as the next person, maybe more so, but a menu of just dessert, or crappy main courses followed by awesome dessert, would be unappealing to me. (OTOH, some of you would be happy with all dessert all the time, and by dessert I mean slash, and you know who you are).
Anyway. I hope S10 takes advantage of what they've done in S9, instead of wrapping it up quickly and then finding a new problem.
Also? I think it's impossible to remove ALL the h/c from anything SPN related. It's too ingrained. :-)
That is also very true! I guess I'm valuing things in like that creation/consumption paradigm, where your creation of some kind of art in response to a thing--whether it's art, fic, conversation, etc.--should lead to more meaningful, fulfilling experiences than just consuming the thing and having that just sort of be that.
I hope S10 takes full advantage of S9, too! Because I just feel like it's a playground with so much I still haven't begun to even take it all in, much less frolic in it--there just isn't enough free time in a lifetime!
And heee, very true. :P But then I feel like there's a difference between "it's just there" characterization H/C and H/C H/C, where the H/C is the primary focus of whatever you're reading/writing, and it's about x, y, or z delicious H/C trope because that trope is awesome (and might also coincide with X storyline or Z point in canon, but is mostly trope trope trope.) And then you feel kind of disingenuous designating a fic as H/C in the header, or adding related tags, because you're like, well

Oh, I agree. I usually want my h/c to have a plot. Like my porn. ;-)
That is generally true of me, too! But now I think it's pretty much exclusively true, haha. Like, I'm attempting to finish a comment!meme fill I started last year, and while it actually is mostly about character stuff, I'm just like yeahhhhh not feeling this amount of H/C, this is not a turn-on to write right now self. XP
Abbadon/Missouri. I know that's not what I'm supposed to take from this post but.....
I loved season nine. It had its issues but for the most part it was great. Issues, I can get behind them. I'm not into the versus wars either though I'm getting fatigued by the way E girls of either brother must jump onto every post that even mildly criticizes their favorite while sympathizing with the poster's own favorite like Dean girls don't have the right to see Dean in the light they see him in and Sam girls don't have the right to view Sam how they like. Haha, that makes very little sense but you know what I mean. :D
ikr it was the first thing that came to mind as I was writing but like a half sentence later I was like WAIT BUT ABADDON/MISSOURI, THO. XDDD Fuck me. XP
UGH I DON'T EVEN WANT TO THINK ABOUT IT. The better I am at staying away from that nonsense the happier I am. But it's so hard to be active and seeking out awesome stuff without also running into not-awesome things!
i see a lot of tumblr posts about how fandom exceeds and is more important than Show (and not just for Show, for--any canon, really.) and i can't disagree more with them. i love canon, i am so defensive of canon, and the disrespect people show it sometimes makes me frown. but once again you have voiced all my feelings. (are you in my brain?) <33
love s9, hate the bickering. i hope s10 is shocking enough to jar everyone out of their ruts so we can get back to loving this great big beautiful dumb thing!!
LIKE, I think you mentioned this on Twitter at some point, but you were commenting on someone's praise for your Lisa while simultaneously casting shade on canon!Lisa. That kind of thing gets me so much, because then it's like lollll WHAT DID I DO WRONG. Like S9, for instance, when people are like "this is how it should have happened in canon." Because then I'm like... but... it did??? Not this exact moment, but this IS what I saw in canon you guiseeee
( ... )
BIGGEST PET PEEVE: when people think they can pick and choose their canon. "spn ended at s5, everything afterward isn't spn." BUT IT IS. IT IS. //IT'S CANON//
i feel u so entirely on all of this.
oh, ugh. precisely the reason i hated redemption road as a project and why i'm absolutely not supporting the s9 fanimation project. SO disrespectful.
ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU LOOK BACK ON THINGS AND YOU'RE JUST LIKE, SWEET BUNNY JESUS PEOPLE. WHEN S2 AIRED PEOPLE HATED IT FOR NOT BEING S1. AND S3, for S2. AND S4 FOR NOT BEING S1/2/3, ETC. ETC. GIVE IT A COUPLE YEARS AND ~EVEN S9 WILL PROBABLY BE ENTERED INTO HALLOWED "CANON."
BECAUSE GUYS I DISTINCTLY REMEMBER Y'ALL HATING S5 WHEN IT WAS AIRING. I get that we're a collection of individuals with many opinions, many of whom are new and many of whom just left after their aired their grievances, but that just proves my point when people nowadays go around stating that S9 is objectively terrible, and nothing like the pure genius that was ~Kripke's S5.
Guys, guys. Do you remember what kind of reaction S5 was getting when S5 was airing. XP NO? I THOUGHT NOT.
I think I must be in the minority on this post, but I absolutely feel you and fandom-over-canon being the status quo. ;) I need to engage with something critically and creatively in the way fandom does to feel a certain level of attachment to it, I think; it's why the best things I've read/watched aren't necessarily my favourites.
That said, I loved s9 for the most part, too! I mean, sure, there are ~issues~ -- there are always ~issues~, with everything -- but IDK, sometimes the absences and problems are the things that make it interesting, too. It'd be nice to have the opportunity to discuss it minus wank. Maybe a general discussion post somewhere like the Bunker, with a ban on brother!wars, would be an idea? At this point we've probably all had time to think about the season as a whole/let our ideas percolate in a way they maybe couldn't while it was going on...
And in terms of having no readership -- well, you're a fantastic, endlessly fascinating writer, so I doubt you're going to have problems there. ;)
Yes!! Like, Six Feet Under is my favorite television program of all time, forever. But SPN is my Show. Because with SFU, sure, it can affect you personally and be meaningful. But it's so perfect to me it's impregnable--you can't write for it, because it's complete. You can't do vids or icons or anything like that because breaking it down into its constituent parts only demonstrates how exactly perfect they are as is, no further action needed (or allowed).
And like, I don't really see the ~issues~ in SPN because they are such warm invitations. Some of them probably aren' intentional, but I think a lot of the room we're given really is meant for us. It's ours, and we have so much room and so many materials with which to make it so. <3333
AHAHA well, I'm glad my flist thinks so. <3 One day I will learn how to market myself appropriately to people who aren't my friends! :P Though lol maybe the world beyond my flist is already well aware of me, and their reaction is 'oh no, not again!' XPP
you realize, FUCK ME, now I really am going to have 1) nothing to read, and 2) actually no readership This is how I feel about any fandom right now since I've pretty much dropped any fandom in favour of originals, which I am currently so immersed in that I sometimes want to go on Tumblr and search the tag with a character's name and then I stop myself, like: hang on, that's my character, nobody even knows him/her >_

To be honest, I feel guilty for not reading your stuff because I do love your writing, but SPN pisses me off so much at this point that I seriously can't stand it >_< I tried to stop watching at least three times XD There are still episodes in season 9 I haven't seen (and one in season 8, I believe). I hope this sense of irritation passes so I can at least catch up on the fanfics

Argh, I have such a love/hate hate/grudging tolerance of AO3, I must confess. I dislike the kudos system a lot. I was presenting at a conference earlier this year and one of the keynote speakers actually theorized the nature of the Internet and its feedback systems, and it made SO, so much to me. Plus my dad thinks the Internet is destroying culture by driving people to subsist on--okay, that is definitely a topic for another post. But tl;dr I do not like the kudos system at alllll. XD Relatedly, I have a hard time reading kudos as something other than "I approve of the existence of this thing," as opposed to "I actually read this thing and took it into myself." /SO MUCH RANT, LOL THE SEQUEL TO MY TUMBLR SIDE-EYE
Don't mind me. XD
I just wish so, so much that the fandom online writing community was set up to actually create a community of writers open to giving and receiving useful constructive feedback. A DREAM, A DREAM.
