The problem with Torchwood

I think I finally figured it out.  I have tried to like the two most recent incarnations of Torchwood.  Really I have.  After all, it's Captain Jack.  What's not to like, right?

I agree. I also think a huge part of the problem, isn't just the characters (although it is a huge part) but RTD is so intent on trying to make it 'real drama' it's lost the wonderful cheesiness of the first two seasons. I don't want 'real drama' I want Tosh, Owen, Ianto, and total cheesiness.

I'm trying to like Miracle Day, I want to like it. So I'm hoping what I felt was a slow start was mostly about RTD not being good at keeping old fans interested while catching new viewers up on what Torchwood is.

You're right, I hadn't thought about it, but there was a LOT of humor and just plain fun in the original series, which is absent. Jack tries to bring a bit of it back, but it's not enough.

Like you, I hope I warm up to the "new" series. I don't want it to be yet another successful series from another country that gets totally screwed up when it is shown to an American audience.

LOL, yes, the Bill Pullman character is very yucky. It's so funny because when he was younger I had SUCH a crush on him. But now... ::shudders::

I know what you mean. I miss Tosh, Owen & Ianto too. And the Hub itself.

I'm just trying to think of this as a spinoff of Torchwood, with the same name. We have a couple of familiar characters in a totally new situation.

I guess that's probably the best way to look at it. I'll try thinking that way from here on out. But I suspect that if I end up judging it on its own merits instead of seeing it in the glow of what was, I will probably stop watching it because it's just not that interesting.
