9=========================
Naoto hopped about on Naoki’s finger, fluttering his wings.
“Since when did you call that guy ‘Naoto-chan’ anyway?” Tetsuya was torn between peering at Naoki curiously and grabbing at the sparrow.
His feline instincts won.
With an alarmed (yet annoyed) chirp, Naoto attempted to take flight. However, he merely succeeded in slowing his descent to the floor.
“Stop that,” Naoki scooped Naoto back up, “And it’s nothing. I was just reminded of another sparrow that I picked up years ago, that’s all.”
Tetsuya shot Naoki an appraising look.
“He was right then. You are good with names.”
Naoto simply nestled himself comfortably in Naoki’s large hands.
=========================
Five whole minutes had passed in general silence before Naoki cleared his throat.
“Naoto-san, are you going to turn back into your human form soon? This was just a demonstration, wasn’t it?” Naoki felt rather than saw Naoto fidget.
Then again, Naoto had made himself comfortable in Naoki’s hair, thereby making it impossible for Naoki to see him without a mirror.
“Awwwww. Is the widdle powderpuff too embarrassed to be seen wearing nothing?” Tetsuya cooed mockingly.
Ah.
Naoki sighed and picked up Naoto’s clothes from the floor, before depositing them together with the sparrow inside Naoto’s room.
=========================
“I’m sure I’m not the only broken-winged sparrow you picked up. How’d you know it was me?” Naoto emerged from his room, loosening his right shoulder.
“You’re the only one with a single black feather on your tail.”
“Huh. I never noticed that.”
“That’s because you don’t look properly.”
“Not everyone can bend over double to lick his own arse, alright.”
“It comes with other benefits.” Tetsuya leered openly at Naoto.
“Guys, please.” Naoki really needed to buy that bottle of aspirin from the pharmacy.
=========================
“Is it just coincidence that you both are here? Of all places?”
“Largely, yes.”
“What do you mean, ‘largely’?”
The two shapeshifters exchanged a look.
“Naoki-san, have you ever realized that certain people tend to attract animals more than others? You, for instance?” Naoto began hesitatingly.
“Now that you mention it, yes. I distinctly remember one school trip to the zoo, where all the animals at the petting area refused to go near this particular senior until he offered them food. There was this cow which even flicked him like he was a fly!”
“And on the other hand, the animals gravitated towards you?”
“Not all of them…”
“Good enough. Here’s the thing. People like you have shapeshifter blood running in their veins.”
“It’s a good thing you like animals as much as they find your scent fascinating,” Tetsuya remarked thoughtfully.
“Not all of them can ‘shift though,” Naoto studied Naoki appraisingly, “From your confusion, I doubt you have, if you are even able to.”
“Wait, hang on. I’m a what?”
“Don’t look so stunned. There’s one of us somewhere in your family tree. We don’t know who, or which clan they belong to, but from the way you smell,” Tetsuya gave Naoki a long sniff, “that person might not even be dead yet.”
Naoki yelped, trying to put some distance between himself and the felid, who seemed like he had forgotten that he was in his human form.
For Tetsuya was purring and nuzzling at the crook of Naoki’s neck.
Neither had noticed Naoto’s disgruntled scowl.
=========================
To Naoki’s slight relief, Tetsuya had ‘shifted back into his feline form during his earlier display of affection.
Naoto, however, wasted no time, taking the opportunity to pick the cat up and lock him out of the house.
Being thoroughly distracted by the warmth emitting from the stone pathway, Tetsuya did not mind too much.
As the tomcat yawned and curled up for a nap in the afternoon sun, a hooded figure, just beyond the threshold of Naoki’s house, slipped silently away.
