As always, Naoto reached home before Naoki. Upon entering the house, he could feel Tecchan’s stare from his spot on the couch. Setting his backpack by the kitchen counter, he returned the tomcat’s calculating look with a pointed one.

“Are you quite done with your games, Tetsuya?”

The tomcat’s eyes glinted in amusement. His body elongated slowly, taking the form of a lithe man. Neither of the two seemed disconcerted with Tetsuya’s lack of clothing.

“Good evening to you too, Naoto.”

“Glad to see that you’re not all cat after all. Your leg is bleeding, by the way.”

“That stitch was sewn on too tight. Besides, I can’t talk to you if I remain in that form, can I? Although, it has been a while. I heard you disappeared. Naturally, I assumed that you died.”

“I don’t die that easily.”

“I was being sarcastic, my dear. Our kind doesn’t just submit to death.”

“Can the romantic bullshit; I feel goosebumps. Great job in trying to get me to leave the house, by the way. It almost succeeded. Almost.”

“Pity. It’s so fun teasing you like this, darling.”

“I said stop it, Tecchan.”

Tetsuya bared his teeth.

Just at that moment, they heard the sound of keys being inserted into the door.

When Naoki entered the living room, he found a ginger cat licking the reopened wound on his leg, and Naoto in the middle of cleaning up the blood stains on his leather couch.

They had to bring Tecchan to the vet to patch his leg up again. While in the waiting room, Naoto voiced out the question which had been bugging him for a while.

“Say, Naoki-san. Any particular reason why you named this monster ‘Tecchan’?”

“No, not really. I just thought that the name suited him, that’s all. Why?”

“Ah, it’s nothing. Just a random question, that’s all.”

Naoki certainly seemed to have extremely good instincts.

“I hate these things. They pull so.” Looking balefully at his thigh, Tetsuya wrinkled his nose.

“Don’t pick at them. I’m not cleaning your blood off any surface again, thank you very much.” Naoto shot the other man a disapproving look.

“I’ve already told you; that stitch was too tight. That vet did a better job the second time. By the way, when are you heading back?”

“I could ask you the same question.”

“Don’t avoid the question. You know as well as I that my clan isn’t the type to bother about absences.”

“It’s not like I can go back in this condition.”

“Do they know? About you?”

“I’m sure they have some inkling as to what’s going on. We have eyes everywhere, after all.” A bitter laugh escaped Naoto’s lips.

“Stifling, isn’t it.” Tetsuya sounded almost empathetic. Almost.

“Not really. Maybe I’m just used to it.”

He was standing on a rooftop, gazing down at the cityscape beneath his feet.

Wanting to get closer to that breathtaking view, he stepped off the edge and spread his wings.

His right wing twisted, and he found himself falling.

Naoto sat bolt upright, with the blanket tangled around his body and sheets in disarray.
=========================

“Has Tecchan been bothering you recently?”

“No, it seems like we have come to a mutual agreement. Why do you ask?” Naoto ignored the affronted look that the ginger cat was directing at Naoki.

“Your dark eye circles don’t seem to be improving. I thought that having a proper place to sleep in would help, but apparently I was wrong. Is there anything that you need to sleep better?” Concern was clearly etched on the taller man’s face.

“I’m fine. The bed is definitely a great improvement from cardboard,” Naoto chuckled, “I’ve just been having recurring dreams, that’s all. I’m sure they’ll pass.”
=========================

The next evening, Naoto found some Valium and a glass of water on his bedside table.
