some things that are cool

~ I saw the deleted scene from Return of the Jedi that was up on youtube for a nanosecond. Eeeeep! Darth Vader was all "come to the dark side, Luke, we have cookies!" while Luke FINISHES HIS LIGHTSABER. THERE WAS CANONICAL ON SCREEN LIGHTSABER CONSTRUCTION. Eeeep.

You know, I'd forgotten ligers were a real thing until I saw Napoleon Dynamite.

Character names! Draco Malfoy is a perfect name for Draco Malfoy. I'm convinced that if Owen in Torchwood had been named Nick, he would have had more fangirling. Because Owen is a nice name but he was a Nick. They would have had to change his last name though, since Nick Harper is too much like Jack Harkness.

Throw Momma From the Train: "OWEN DOESN'T HAVE ANY FRIENDS!"

One of my fave character names ever: General Buck Turgidson in Dr Strangelove.

Hee! One of my favorites too. Also, Salacious Crumb from Star Wars. And uh, Hiro Protagonist from Snow Crash.

Nick Harper, I love it. That's very Owen-ish, kinda snarky, lots of women... wait. WAIT. Oh, I know why it sounded familiar! There's a pulp detective series of books following a guy named Nick Carter which are basically soft core porn and action. Like James Bond, but more sex.

It's funny how Nick is badass... but Will is a nice guy. (I really like the name Will, but Bill is not my cup o' tea... and tag the 'y' on it, and it's just a big bag of no.

Napoleon Dynamite's not a bad name either.

previous to this, my last liger related thought: I think I was reading about a furry-related wank on fandom_wank, and the chick's totem animal was a liger, and it was all, OF COURSE. Why doesn't anyone ever have, like, an opossum totem?

I don't know... about totems! How are they chosen? How is babby made totem chosen?

There was a scene in a book or film about the name Nick being good for rakes and rogues, I think... or maybe I dreamed this.

Will is usually a nice guy. Good Will (Hunting). ;) Non to the Billy. Billy, Don't Be A Hero, Billy Carter... the 1970s killed Billy.

Oh, and you wanted prompts! I won't nag you to finish Enough To Go By. I won't. See? Not nagging. (SORRY I HATE WHEN PEOPLE DO THAT TO ME.)

White Collar! I would like to know about Jones. What's up with Jones? How does he describe Neal to his significant other? Or does he? Or is he having a clandestine affair with someone in the office?

It's in Rach's court right now. Feel free to nag her! *grin* (It is fun for me not to be delinquent since usually it is ALWAYS me.)

I dunno but it's always lions tigers bears oh my! Or wolves. Or wild horses. No one is ever anything normal like a squirrel.

I LOVE JONES. There needs to be more Jones in the world. Maybe he is Ianto's SECRET BROTHER.

Prompt - everyone seems to be writing AU at the moment. Or is it just that I think everyone is writing AU because it's my newest fixation? Anyway. Write one of those. The TW crew as fighter pilots, rock band, on the Enterprise (actually that'd be all kinds of awesome, and I might die from teh hotness of the mental image of Captain Jack and Captain Picard...right. Tangent)

Or, in another "hey finish this thing I started and can't get write" idea, write a Ianto/Owen fic set between Seasons 1 and 2. Dooo it. Let there be porn.

I dunno. Write anything. I like your stuff. :-)

So you're on the AU bandwagon, huh? I guess I'd have to read some before I wrote it... I don't think I ever have. Mostly because in Buffy fandom where I used to lurk all the AUs were always like, "now they are all human and in college!" and I was like... okay... why is this interesting? I like vampires, damn it! But rock stars and the enterprise are cool in their own right, so that might be interesting.

Jack/Picard huh? Jack would not be able to resist stroking that skull!

Ianto/Owen. Hmm... *percolates*

I didn't understand the AU in the past. Like you, I don't entirely get why it's interesting to take some of the most interesting parts of the magic-powered Buffy crew, or alien-fighting TW crew, etc. and plunk them into a high school drama. It seemed like nothing good ever came of that ( ... )

Iiiiiiinteresting, I thought. Most AU does not mess with the age order between Jack and Ianto. What if we messed with that, but kept the essential characters the same? Also, student/teacher fic is hot, but also skeevy, and for me the sweet spot is if the reader is turned on and rooting for the pairing, but also a bit disgusted with him/herself at the same time. It adds extra squirm to the squirminess. It started as an excuse for cheap porn, but I think I'm incapable of truly cheap porn.

You are always expensive, high class porn! This is hot! I look forward to it.

I remember when everyone was raving about blue's fic... but I was feeling un-romance-y at the time, so I never read it. The rock star thing sounds awesome sauce.

I totally agree with you about the genre thing; it really can be thought provoking. I know the AU thing is really big in Merlin fandom, actually... lots of modern-day AU... Sherlock surprised me a little on that front bc it was so fanfic genre to a small screen near you...!

You know, I know Sherlock had some problems, and I more or less agree with most of the points in Neoliberal Holmes... but fuck it, I love it anyway. Any show where there's a human head in a fridge, that's for me. There's already some really nice stuff written, as well as the ever-popular "what if they play truth or dare" type thing.

On names - I'm thinking of a character on 30 Rock who's this very prickly, pretentious British guy named Wesley Snipes. When people say, no, you're not Wesley Snipes, he's an actor, he points out that if you saw the two of them, and you didn't know the actor, which one of them would YOU think was supposed to be Wesley Snipes?

I enjoyed watching Sherlock but I didn't think it was good, you know? And the second episode I thought was actually bad. Still, lots of fodder there, certainly. I really, really liked the performances. I just have developed a disillusionment with Steven Moffat.

Buffy Fashion Roulette, where have you been all my life?

Eternal question, indeed. If we're lucky. I never tire of this topic, which first arose in my life when I was a girl and overheard my dad dissing Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture because the guy was an adulterer. o_O

Can I second Foxy's White Collar prompt for a Jones fic? Jones definitely doesn't get enough live in WC fandom.

It's always good to see you here, bb!

Love. As in Jones doesn't get enough. Love. In that fandom. *facepalm*

Good to see you too, hon! Maybe I can keep it up!

I think I've been playing Buffy Fashion Roulette in my head since the show started and I didn't even know it.

I am perolating Jones. He seriously needs more life. And love. ;-)

coming up with character names is always RIDICULOUSLY difficult for me - i don't want them to just be BLAH but i also don't think that all the characters in my story need to have ~special~ names that ~mean something~ b/c it's terribly unrealistic - sometimes ppl get stuck with stupid names, that's life

in reading, i hate it when, especially in fantasy or sci-fi, they have names that are unpronounceable, b/c then i just end up calling them something else in my head and it will make me pause every time their names come up

LOL. Yeah, I like coming up with names. It's not that they have to mean something, I just like them to convey something -- a feeling, or sound a certain way. Sometimes they're stupid, but then... you know, they kinda hate their name, and then that effects them. I just think about it a lot.

re: reading -- you're better than me. Lately if I don't like the names or if they're not just neutral, I won't even be able to keep going. I used to have a much higher tolerance for it though.

hmm... see when i NEED to hurry up and think of a name for an OC, i freeze and can't think up anything that fits (this is when i'm already in the middle of writing something, and that one detail is making me STOP)

but sometimes i just come up with AWESOME names for characters, but i never actually write the characters that fit those names... you know?
