So... I've been having this weird LJ phobia to go with all the other flavors of insanity I've been dipping into of late. If anything of note's happened to you guys in the last... several weeks, I'm probably unaware -- so please do drop me a comment if there's anything you'd like to share with me

I get back from the UK on the 18th. At which point writers meetings at least every other week. Period. (Eventhough I know we're both going to be all, "guess we have to write our Bristol papers now" around then).

and generally now I just want more time to READ what with all this talk of books! I stumbled onto this book from the teens on Gutenberg recently "Ashton-Kirk, Investigator" which is sort of Wimsey meets Wooster ... must get back to the other volume "Ashton-Kirk, Criminologist" They're just the lollyest!
(also, Tim Gunn basically agrees with you (and me) about the crack!judging in his blog today)

re: Julian May -- some issues with the latter books, but I just LOVE the time travel of it, and also, am in Love With Marc Remillard. And a little bit with Jack too. Actually all the Remillards. ;-)
re: Court of the Air -- I too am a couple of chapters in, and stalled out. It's weird because it has tons of excellent ingredients but the result -- doesn't wow me. You know?
Lovely to hear from you too! *really fierce hugs*

I think it's because everyone he meets is SPECIAL, with a capital "S", but they're not very well drawn out. The world is rich with detail, but not very deep. When the hobbits are smoking "Longbottom Leaf" in Tolkien's books, that means something because I know enough about the world to understand it. When folks in CofA are chewing/smoking/whatever Crystobardian Leaf, it means nothing to me. (I made the name up because I can't recall what the actual name was or what they were doing with it.) The world feels like a gamers world. You know, like books that are written from role-playing games?
Anyway, that's my take on it. I'm two hundred pages in and I've stopped reading now. I'm just skimming past this point to see what happens.
I love your "really fierce hugs" btw! They are awesome!!!
