Possible spoilers for Torchwood: COE

I started to watch Torchwood: Children of Earth last night.

Um, when did this show actually get weighty, toothy, and actually watchable? I admit to making it a sport of mocking Torchwood due to the fact that I think John Barrowman's acting on the show generally veers between wooden and campy (and sometimes both) and because I think Ianto has about ( Read more... )

I'm a huge fan of Torchwood and I think we need more LGBT ass-kicking heroes like Harkness. I loved COE but I will say it's quite the rollercoaster ride.

Without giving too much away let me say this, keep watching. You will have plenty to discuss after episode 5.

Mocking Torchwood was easy because it was awful. And then Children of Earth made fun of me by being damn good.

I haven't had a chance to watch as much of Torchwood as I'd like but its on my list because sometimes slightly campy sci fi with a touch of serious is a lot of fun.

Also in terms of the insularity, oh yes, that's why people need to travel. I've been lucky enough to live in places like New Zealand where the Pacific in all its colors is there. Or even just going to a big city, its so good for someone to be in a place where being white doesn't mean you're the majority.

Also Avatar is on my Netflix queue, I've been meaning to watch it for a while, life just hasn't always been useful that way.

I was convinced by the "blue-eyed Aang" picture. Monk Gyatso was (obviously) Tibetan, so I figured Air Nomads are Tibetan. Then I saw Hideous Blue-Eyed Aang, and I went, okay, damn, Aang's not a white kid. I should have seen that before.

It's all made-up. They don't know that so much of the world is based on real cultures, they don't get how much attention to detail and research the creators put into the cartoon, because they've NEVER SEEN THESE CULTURES, IRL.I can imagine looking at the show and not being able to see which parts are drawn from which real world culture, or assuming that the text is all gibberish when it so is not. But what seems to be under discussion here is a level of ignorance that is literally incomprehensible to me. Were there no "Eskimos" in the social science books? I mean, it doesn't require a sophisticated knowledge of Native nations to pick up on some of the Water Tribe stuff. I know, because I don't have one ( ... )

You and me both. Hey, maybe we're reverse ignorant; we've never learned/seen/been exposed to anything so Whitey McWhite that it's like a fantasy for us!

...and yes, I'm being serious.
