Talking about drunken style martial arts, have you seen Drunken Master starring a young Jacky Chan? I think it was his first major starring role.

Drunken Master did make him famous. But his breakout role was a little film called Snake in Eagle's Shadow, which he filmed when he was on loan to another studio. It was the first film he had any control over (the studio system is very strong in Hong Kong) so it's the first where you see his signature style starting to develop.

Of course, the very first film anybody saw him in was Bruce Lee's famous Fist of Fury, he's the stunt double for the big bad Japanese guy when he flies back through the wall.

I saw Drunken Master many, many years ago. I'll have to give it another viewing. In fact, I may have to do on a martial arts film viewing SPREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

It may be heresy(and a little boring), and although Aikido is my style, I'm gonna have to say if you're concerned about self-defense, you're best off with a modern, military martial art, like the US-developed LINE, IDF's Krav Maga, or Russia's Systema.

Oh, I'm a longtime fan of krav as well as aikido. However, I still think it's important to develop a strong backup plan, and arts like ninjutsu get you a tactical strategy that will help a small woman when krav totally fails. If I'm trying to deal with a 6'4" 300 lb. man, I think that ninjutsu is going to help me more than krav if I get pinned or knocked down.

Augh Sharky the pibble and his brood! Why isn't he eating them? Why aren't they fleeing from him? Aieeeee! Explain to me!

Just...go to YouTube and search "sharky pit bull." He's a pibble that lives in Texas on a spread that includes rabbits and chickens, and he's taken a shine to playing with and taking care of baby wildlife. His owner has had him since he was four or five weeks old, and when she first introduced him to a gaggle of baby chickens, he did nothing but lick them and gently play daddy. So he does the same thing every time his owner gets new chicks. There are also clips of him with a generation of the now-grown-up chickens that he's known since they were babies, and it's HILARIOUS because they STILL follow him around.

ALL of the videos of him are completely brain-meltingly cute. There's a new clip of him licking a baby rabbit to death!

Alex is THE shit. I adore watching clips of him sparring and teaching. I'm also in San Francisco, which means that I can walk outside at any given moment -- and the best time is between 5:00 - 7:00 AM -- to any park in the City and see people practicing every possible variation on every single Chinese fighting tradition ever from the last three thousand years, so I've grown up watching people do drunken style. (Honestly, it makes me appreciate Jackie Chan more.)
