My mom. She is, without hesitation, my ultimate hero. She is the single strongest person I know, having gone through unspeakable abuse her entire childhood and teenage years (and, yes, I mean that literally) and has come out the other side with a will of steel, a kind heart, unshakeable determination, and beauty.

When I had my surgery, she was there with me the entire time. She's the one who made me walk again--she wouldn't let me give up. I sound like I'm five years old when I say this, but I really hope I can be like her as I grow older.

Terry Fox. He is basically the quintessential Canadian hero, in my mind. For people who don't know who he is, Terry Fox was an long distance runner and basketball player in Simon Fraser University, B.C. He was diagnosed with cancer in 1977 and had to have his leg amputated above the knee. If I've done my math right, he'd was about 19 at the time. This was before cancer was a 'cause' like it is today (or so our elementary teachers told us), and mostly, people just didn't talk about it. Terry saw a lot of people suffering in the hospital, and he decided that he was not going to ignore it.

Now some people, at this stage in their life, might have gone door to door, or become advocates, or started a charity. Terry Fox was awesome and ambitious as hell, so he didn't take the ordinary person option. Instead, he decided to run across fucking Canada, from the coast of Newfoundland to the coast of B.C., a distance of around 8000 kilometres (5000 miles). He dipped his foot the the Atlantic Ocean on April 12, 1980 and started running ( ... )

He made a huge, completely non-violent difference. Which, now that I think about it, defines a lot of Canadian heroes ;).

I second this. His legacy is just amazing. So inspiring. I think to be a Canadian is to know Terry Fox.
