Welcome to Tuesday chat! A new day, new beginnings--and another 1 billion degree day to wake up to. *falls over in sweat* I blew dry my hair this morning and it was basically like sticking my head in a volcano. OH DAYSTAR, YOU SHINE BRIGHT AND BURN MEEEEEEE.
Thinking cool, cool thoughts...here is what this community has been up to:
EDIT: As you can see this was...a lot of linkage! So, if I've mislinked something, or if a link is broken, please let me know!!

Oh, boy, there is just not enough time to say all the lovely things about our featured member of the month,
scaryrei . I have personally known Rei over a few years now, and I can always count on her for support in all arenas of fandom and in our amazing friendship! She is a frequent commenter and reviewer of this community and her writing and art are both forces to be reckoned with. I LOVE REI. You can find out more about Rei and spam her pages with your love
over this way. Today's chat,
things are looking up.
I only watch maybe one anime series every few years (the last one I watched was freaking GURREN LAGANN back in ... '07!? Yikes!) and my latest love is
Tiger & Bunny. Thanks be to
sureasdawn for directing my attention to this amazing show! It pretty much has everything I love in a show--humor with interlaced poignant moments of angst, and some kind of mobile suit apparatus in fight scenes. HOORAY.
If you're unfamiliar with the show, the basic plot is that certain people called NEXT are born with superpowers, an some are chosen to participate in a "HERO TV" program that broadcasts these "heroes" (who are each represented by a company, bearing ridiculously large logos all over their costumes) doing good heroic deeds all over the city. These good deeds, like capturing criminals or saving civilians, are all worth points which the heroes try to rack up over a season. You may think there's an awful lot of social commentary interwoven with the plot, but really, the show emphasizes each Hero and what being a hero really means to them, whether it's getting the most points or pleasing the sponsors the most or saving the most people.
OF COURSE because I am THAT PERSON WHO IS PROBABLY THEIR TARGET MARKET, I get really emotional over moments where people are very brave in the face of adversity, when characters do the thing that they probably shouldn't do, but know in their heart that it is right. I AM A SUCKER, I KNOW. All my personal heroes fit this sort of mold.
One of my biggest heroes is the lady of my icon, Aimee Mullins. I saw her speak at a conference, and didn't know who she was really, but I walked in and there were six pairs of artificial legs on the stage and knew, damn, this girl has something to say.
People who are told their entire life that they cannot do something, but do it anyway. HELLO, BE STILL MY BEATING HEART. Aimee has done the things we can only dream of--walking for Alexander McQueen (with CUSTOM CARVED WOODEN LEGS, AGGGHHH I DIE!!!), roles in major motion pictures, being in the freaking Olympics. When her legs were amputated as a child, I'm sure no one could dream she would ever be able to do these things--except, of course, for her. She didn't even question it! BRAVERY IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY. I LOVE YOU, AIMEE.
So, my beloved comm, please share your personal heroes--tell us a little bit about them, why they shine in your eyes, things you see in them that you hope for yourself. What qualities do you look up to in your heroes? Has someone you ever looked up to let you down? Tell us!
