"Clash of the Kages" Contest

A KakaSaku/Mythology Fanfiction Contest

Come gather around the hearth
where my old friend Homer will tell the tale
of Gods and Heroes, demons and foes
of wars and quests, kingdoms and throes
of passion and rages that embrace us all
where the powers that be make us hold our vows.
The Fates will spin and weave our destinies
while we fight for our land, for our freedom, for our love.
Fires that empower our will and warm our hearts
flame that guides us through the storm
as we fight and battle our way towards Victory
winged Goddess that will lay us in laurels and glory.
Your story begins here, O masterful writer
where the lyre strums the chords and Apollo shines on you
May the Muses accompany you on this Odyssey
For I will wait for you to fulfill your prophecy!

About: Mythology is a part of the wonderful tapestry of World History, my fellow KakaSaku fans, so I will bid the test for you to combine the tales and legends that moved the world along with our favorite couple.

Your challenge is: Choose your myth or legend, add Kakashi, Sakura, some more Naruto characters, set your plot in the Narutoverse, and then write fanfiction that has no comparison!

Rules:
  1. Entries must be a work of KakaSaku fanfiction adapted from one of the Greek or Roman myths known.
  2. Length restrictions are not applied. Entries can be as short or as long as you want. Please bear in mind that multiple multi-chapter entries may result in a judging period longer than the designated week.
  3. Two authors are allowed do the same myth/legend, however, since many of you might want to avoid this, you must let Zelha know your name and the myth you want to adapt and she will post it in the participant list (see below) so others can see that that source material is already being used.
  4. You have to tell Zelha that you are participating and which myth you want to adapt by March 31st so that she and the other judges can make sure they have adequate familiarity with that myth/legend.
  5. Entries written in script format will not be accepted. This contest is focused on prose fiction a la Homer style. Meaning, no poem or script format.
  6. You must give credit where credit is due. Please cite the myth/legend you’ve chosen as source in your Author's Note.
  7. Your characters should not be plugged into the exact context of the Homeric Tales. One of your central challenges is to manipulate the text into something that it’s a piece of Naruto fanfiction. All stories should be set in the Narutoverse, with the exception of a modern-day AU adaptation, which should be stated in the beginning of the entry.
  8. Plot loyalty has been mildly released. You have no need to recreate the myth in its entirety, just adapt it and twist it to your heart’s content. The essence of the myths is the ace card that should be dealt out, along with the characterizations and the situations. Keep in mind that there are a lot of versions of a particular legend, so you might want to point out what version you’ve worked with in the final author’s notes. Ultimately, what you choose to omit or include is your decision. You are the author and only you know how to work this to your satisfaction.
  9. To honor the myths we are playing with, the last line of your submission must be a pledge to the God, Goddess, Muse or Hero of your choosing. Just to keep everything on the epic side.

Date: All entries are due by May 1st. They will be posted on the evening of May 1st and the voting thread will be opened on May 2nd.

Prizes: The winner of the competition will receive several amazing prizes!
  • A KakaSaku doujinshi provided by the awesome nimblnymph or a KakaSaku (M-rated) doujinshi provided by the lovely limerance (just choose one)
  • Naruto (Kakashi Naruto and Sai) wallscroll by the awesome pockyphotograph
  • A beautiful handmade Kage mini-hat made by the ever dexterous omizu (Kage of your choosing)
I would love to include fanarts, but I don’t want to bother my artist friends since I know how much they have on their plates nowadays. Cyn, Saph, Leona, Slinky, you name them. They're awesome and also very busy, haha. Although I’m positive we won’t turn down a fanart offering, yes?

Submitting: Email your entries as an MSWord file to Zelha at zelhasaga@gmail.com. All entries are due by May 1st, but they can be turned in earlier at your convenience. Please include in the email your name (author's name), your preferred email address, the title of your entry, and the name of the myth/legend which you adapted. Authors must email Zelha on May 1st with a link to their published stories.

Posting: Entries may not be posted anywhere before May 1st. The authors may post their entries anywhere they like on May 1st and then must email Zelha a link, which she will use in an entry in kakasaku. Authors may post their entries wherever they like.

Scoring: Scoring will be calculated in two categories:
Open voting (worth 50%) A poll will be set up in kakasaku where people may go to vote on entries. The polls will be open from May 2nd through May 9th. Each participant’s scores will be calculated by votes received out of the percentage of total votes cast. See the LJ community on May 2nd.

Judging (worth 50%) Judges will give scores from 1 (bad) to 10 (excellent). There will be five categories of judging:

I. Grammar, spelling, diction, and overall quality and mechanics of the author’s writing.
II. Adaptation: did the author remain faithful to the plot and thematic content of the original myth while still adapting it to the Narutoverse?
III. Rule Adherence: did the author follow all of the outlined rules, including citing their source in the authors note and a line addressing to a God/Goddess/Muse/Hero at the end of their story?
IV. General Enjoyability: this is where the judges can be completely subjective and score based off of how much they enjoyed the story.
V. Literary Merit: did the author emulate the myths/legends in more than just plot by using higher level writing devices such as fresh figurative language, pun, motifs, symbolism, etc.
