Lent -- this year it's Red Meat and Red Wine I'm giving up.

Giving up red meat and red wine for Lent this year, though I am no longer a practicing catholic. I enjoy the discipline of it, and how much more meaningful it is now that I get to make the choice instead of having my parents choose for me. It's now a challenge and rewarding, not a kind of dreary punishment

I read this with great interest (and a fair amount of being disturbed at the thought of someone other than oneself assigning what was to be given up). As a JewBu (Jewish by birth and Buddhist by in adulthood having taken Buddhist vows) Lent is nowhere in any part of my personal practice, but I do have many practices of abstentions even to the point of total fasts of both food and speech, so I do appreciate the benefits of selective "giving up".
