Christmas and birthday present finally arrived and I am in lurve. I'm pretty confident that the demise of printed tome is not eminent, but if I can do my part to save just one logger from a tree spike or an earlier logging company's left behind cable, I will have done my part for society ( Read more... )

I love Connie Willis, but Passages left me a quivering wreck. I haven't read much more of the "academic science fiction," as you call it, but I see what you mean by that.

My mom has a Kindle. I'm sticking with paper for now. I really don't like the digital rights management (like with the Nook, you can only lend a book once, and you can only lend it for something like ten days - and if you buy a book from Amazon and something goes hinky with the rights, they can just pull it off your Kindle). I'm all-digital in the rest of my life, but I can't give up the paper habit yet.

Did not read that fine print closely enough. Ah well, will have reserve my loaning for the almost-mom-in-law. At least for a while. She was the giver of the present, after all.

There are still a few aspects to recomend it over the Kindle, like reading books without purchase if you are sitting in a brick and mortar store. Still like my coffee, still like to read while having my coffee. And that base memory. It will take a while to hit 1500-ish titles, but hitting 200 is not out of he realm os possibility with in the first year.

The digital rights issue is out there. It's a risk.

Hey- Long time not chat, but I just got my nook on the same day last week! Being the librarian that I am, I researched everything before I picked out the best reader. I also have all sorts of links to stuff (a website with free ebooks (good sci-fi ones even) and other stuff. If you're interested, let me know! xoxox
