This is why I hate switching for gauge. The jacket I want to knit calls for a gauge of 21 stitches and 23 rows over 10cm on 5mm needles.

On 5mm needles I get 26 stitches and 23 rows over 10cm.

On 4.5mm needles I get 22 stitches and 20 rows over 10cm.

I can either use 5mm needles for a jacket that's the right length but baggy, or 4.5mm needles for a ( Read more... )

Use the 4.5mm. You can always fix the row gauge by knitting more rows. Getting the stitch gauge right is much more important.

Yes, this. Length is irrelevant, almost (at least, it is with things like jackets); width is not unless you want to do a LOT of maths. Being off on length requires only a little working out (but will include fitted sleeves being a little 'off' from the pattern, etc.).

Use the needles that give you the right width, and add more rows.

The problem is, it's all knit in squares, panels and bands, otherwise I would do what I usually do, which is use the correct needles for width and knit to the right length.

How is it constructed? Can any of the bands be made 2 rows deeper to compensate for shorter panels? Without seeing it it's hard to guess what you could adjust.

I have to say that I may need to show my Mom your user icon. Most appropriate. A shame she is half-way around the world, she is the best knitting guru/unfucker-upper I know.

Have you tried using one of each size? Might not help, but sometimes worth a try.
