kyuhyun and his nine fun adventures of his job at the cafe.
Cho Kyuhyun enjoyed his job as a barista, serving people coffee, scones, croissants, and a lot of different things at the cafe. All his customers seemed to enjoy being served by him as well because, he hated to sound arrogant but, he was a very nice looking guy. Out of all the customers he have served, he specifically remembers nine different ladies who walked into the cafe and gave him a memory of a lifetime and out of the nine, one especially left a great mark in his heart.
i. Hyoyeon
“Can I just have a mocha latte, please?”
Kyuhyun quickly scribbled down her order and left to make her drink. He came back with it and set it down in front of her, silently whispering a enjoy your drink when she started messing her hair up. He was quite surprised at her actions and took a step back, afraid that something might happen to him. She looked up to him and offered him an apologetic smile.
“I-I’m sorry. It’s just that I have so much in my mind right now. I’m so close to being fired from my job because I need to get an article in before it’s deadline which is only 7 freaking hours from now and the person that I was supposed to interview suddenly just disappeared into thin air and I can’t get in contact with him. Oh, and if that isn’t enough, my stupid boyfriend says he’s enlisting in the army which is totally not helping me out right now. That stupid anchovy, does he really think I’ll wait for him? After what he’s done to me? I don’t think so. But then, I love him so much and he was there for me when my parents almost disowned me because I said I’d do this job as a reporter and I don’t know. My life is screwed up.”
Hyoyeon looked up at him and scowled when she realized he was just staring at her. “And you probably didn’t even listen to all that crap I just said. Honestly, it’s fine. I’m kind of glad I let it out on a stranger because I’m pretty sure I’ll never meet you again unless I come back to this cafe which I don’t think I will.”
She picked up her drink, waved to him slightly, and left.
ii. Taeyeon
“Welcome to Sweet Delight, what may I get for you?”
This short petite lady was snapped from her daze outside her window and turned to face him. “I’ll have an ice americano, please.” She gave him a polite smile and he gave one back. He quite liked customers like her, ones that knew her manners. “Coming right up.”
He came back with the drink only moments later and set it down for her. “Enjoy your drink.” Before he could fully turn his back to her, he felt her grab onto his wrist which caused him to turn back around to her. “Yes?”
“Can you just... stay here? I’m feeling lonely tonight and I kind of want some company.” Kyuhyun lightly smiled at her statement and nodded his head and sat down across from her, placing his serving plate in front of him.
“Isn’t it wonderful tonight? I mean, look at the stars? It would have been a great night for a date which was where I was supposed to be before that stupid bastard of a boyfriend decided to break up with me. I could never fully understand boys. I mean, they break up with you at the oddest times ever. There was nothing wrong with our relationship from my point of view, I wonder what caused him to break up with me. Did I do something wrong? I don’t think I did because all I remember is being completely nice to him, was never rude, never got mad even when I saw him making out with some girl at the back of a club. What did I do wrong?”
Taeyeon turned to face him and slightly blushed realizing she just told her whole heart to some random barista at some random cafe she just decided to walk into when she was walking home from their supposed-to-be date area.
“I’m sure you did nothing wrong. He was just stupid that’s all.” Kyuhyun gave her a reassuring smile before being called back to the counter by one of his co-workers. He stood up and gave her a bow before returning to his spot. He watched as she picked up her purse and headed out the door, with a smile on her face.
iii. Sunny
“A black coffee, quickly please!”
It was rush hour in the morning and there were a bunch of people demanding drinks and pastries here and there but it seemed like this one short girl was much more in a hurry than others. She couldn’t stop jumping up and down and kept yelling at him to make the coffee more quicker. Now, Kyuhyun rarely got mad at customers but he couldn’t help but snap at the girl and tell her to keep her mouth shut or he won’t do her order. That got him a pout on her face but at least it kept her quiet.
He handed her the drink and she quickly grabbed it and sprinted out the door, cursing at herself repeating the words, “I’m going to be late, I’m going to be late.” The last words he heard from her mouth before she left was, “If I ever come back, I’m going to murder that barista.”
iv. Yuri
“Ooh, all these cakes look good. What do you recommend on a fine summer day?”
Kyuhyun looked up to this quite happy looking customer who asked for his opinion. He just replied saying that the fruit cake was quite popular with women and she listened to him and ordered a slice. He cut it out and gave her a piece and watched her as she returned to her seat where a bunch of her friends were waiting.
It seemed like forever before her friends and the lady decided to leave the cafe. Before she left however, she came back up to the counter and said to him, “Your fruit cake, wasn’t too popular with my girls. Next time, try to recommend something sweeter.” With that, she ran out the door, evidently having a great time.
v. Jessica
“Anything cold, please. I’m boiling with anger right now and I just need to cool down.”
That’s all he got from her when he asked what she would like to order. He wasn’t too sure to get her so he just gave her an iced coffee. She accepted it and basically drank it down in one gulp. He wanted to tell her that it wasn’t too good for her stomach and she’d probably feel sick the next morning but she seemed like she was in a state where talking to her may not be the best idea.
“That fucking bitch. Ugh.”
Kyuhyun snapped his head back in surprise at her fowl language and just stared at her, quite amused at all the american swearing she was doing. Although he failed his English class in high school, he clearly understood swears because that’s what you learn first when you’re learning a language.
“Mind your own business kid.” He didn’t realize that was directed to him until she slapped him on the arm. “Oh, I’m sorry. I was just deep into thoughts, I wasn’t, you know, listening in or anything-” He was cut off by a quite evil like laugh from her. “You’re quite bad at lying, you know that? Well, you kind of made my day, but the coffee you gave me was way too sweet. Try to lower the cream you put in there, alright kiddo?”
She waved him a goodbye and fixed her glasses before heading out to her car.
v. Seohyun
“I’d like a slice of that sweet potato cake, please. Actually, make that two.”
He nodded and cut out two pieces of the cake and handed it to her. He watched as she walked away happily, admiring the sweet potato pieces on top of the cake. She sat down across her boyfriend whom he overheard her call as Yonghwa and just looked at them for quite a long time. He hasn’t had a girlfriend in what seemed like forever so he was quite jealous whenever he saw couples and the one he was looking at right now, seemed so sweet.
It seemed like the guy quite understood the girl and the girl gave up a lot for the guy. Of course, that was just from the outside, he would never know how that couple came to be and what caused them to be such in deep love with each other. But, that’s also the fun of observing stranger couples.
vii. Yoona
“Uh, don’t you guys have any other drinks here that aren’t coffee related?”
He wasn’t quite sure how to respond and thought that she was kind of stupid. She walked into a cafe, what else did she expect to find in here to drink?
“Like orange juice, apple juice, anything other than... coffee?” He cleared his throat a little, surprised at how naive this lady seemed to be. “Well, we do serve smoothies but they aren’t really on the menus because most people seem to walk into the cafe wanting coffee.” He emphasized the two words, hoping she understood where he was coming from.
She didn’t seem to when she replied with a sigh while ordering a strawberry banana smoothie with an apple pie slice on the side. He came back with her order. Kyuhyun usually stays quiet and wouldn’t ask these kind of things, but he was really curious.
“What did you think we serve at a cafe?”
Yoona seemed startled at his sudden question but she replied calmly. “I was expecting this place to be a little different, I mean looking in from the outside, the cafe was arranged in a different way than most places so I thought the menu would be a bit unique with things that a lot of cafes wouldn’t have but, I was wrong.”
“So are you a kind of person who is always looking for different things?” She nodded. “That’s pretty much how you can describe me.” She took a sip of her smoothie and nodded her head in approval. “You guys should definitely put this on the menu, it tastes much better than I bet any of your coffees taste.”
Kyuhyun laughed and took her words into consideration.
viii. Sooyoung
“Can I just order everything off this menu? It all sounds so good.”
Skinny girl who seems to eat a lot? That’s definitely what he thought when he came over to the table to take her order. “Uh, I’m pretty sure your wallet will start hurting and so will my hands when I have to make everything for you.” “Good point.”
“I think I’ll just take a whole cherry pie and a large caramel machiatto.” He stared at her in surprise. “Can you eat that all?” She smiled and nodded. “Of course, this is going to be like, nothing compared to what I usually eat. This is only a snack before I go out to lunch with some of my friends. They’re taking so long to call me over and I was starving so I just decided to have a little something.”
He whispered under his breath this is totally not a little something hoping she doesn’t hear it and to his relief, she doesn’t. It takes a while, because it’s lunch time and there’s a lot of orders and also her order was quite a lot, before he comes with her “meal”. He tells her bon appetite and she starts digging in right away.
Kyuhyun watches in disgust as she starts scarfing down her pie and drinks the machiatto as if it was just water. He was quite shocked at how little time she took before she finished the pie and coffee. His eyes were so wide because although he’s worked at this cafe for 2 years, he’s never seen a customer like her. He walked away from her and didn’t even bother returning her greetings when she headed out the door.
ix. Tiffany
Kyuhyun was cleaning up everything and was heading towards the doors to lock them when a beautiful looking lady walked in and scratched her head in apology.
“Do you mind taking one more customer before you close down?” She smiled at him and the way her eyes became half moons literally killed him so he just nodded and led her to a seat. “Your drink is on the house. You’re the last customer of the day so I decided to give you a special discount.”
He was amused at the way her cheeks turned bright pink as she waved her hands back and forth in front of her face. “No, no. I shall pay for my coffee if it’s find with you, I find that way too big of a burden for me. I don’t know how I’d live on with my life without paying for something that I’ll be consuming.” He slightly chuckled at how adorable she could be when embarrassed.
“No, I insist. Now, what would you like?” He walked towards the counter to start making whatever she ordered. “One caramel coffee please. Oh! And with an extra spoonful of sugar as well!” A caramel coffee was quite sweet already the way it was, but extra sugar? This girl must not be wanting to sleep tonight. “Another spoonful of sugar?”
She nodded. “Yup. Haven’t you ever watched Mary Poppins? A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down? Well, I always believe something extra sweet might make all the bad things that happened go away and it usually very much does so I always ask for the extra spoonful.”
“Well, I’ve never actually bothered watching that movie although my past girlfriends have begged me to but I guess I could give it a try if this so called Mary Poppins lady says a spoonful of sugar does that to you. I could actually never eat something so sweet, which is why I always order an espresso or something when I order coffee.”
“You order coffee? Don’t you make it yourself? I mean, you are a barista, don’t you know how to make all different kinds of beverages?” She tilted her head in confusion and scratched her head, trying to fit all these mismatching puzzle pieces in her head.
“Well, I’ve never really tasted any of my works before. I prefer to order from someone else.” He actually didn’t realize any of this until this stranger brought it up. “Then how do you know that your coffee is actually good?”
“I do have customers don’t I?” He chuckled and brought her the caramel coffee that she ordered and took a seat across from her.
“True, but if I was ever as talented as you were in making something so sweet as coffee, I’d die to have it everyday. I can’t cook. Can’t even put a decent coffee together. That’s how sloppy of a cook I am.” She lightly laughed and he couldn’t help but be stunned at how angelic the sound of her laugh sounded.
“I’m sure you’re much better at other things, cooking isn’t that important at all. You can always buy it can’t you? I know I suck at playing any instruments. I’ve tried almost everything out there but can’t seem to perfect any one.”
“Have you tried the flute?” The flute? Was she seriously recommending this to a guy? “No, I have not. It always came out to me as a, a-”
“Girlish instrument?”
“Well, yes.”
She sighed and took a sip of her coffee. “Well, it so happens that I play the flute and the sound of it is so soothing and wonderful. You should really come to one of my recitals or something and hear out it will take you away with it’s magnificent sound. Actually, I’m having one tomorrow, you want to come?”
He was shocked at her sudden invitation. “But, you’ve only known me for 15 minutes, do you really want to give me a free ticket to one of your concerts that I’m pretty sure people are dying to have?”
Kyuhyun watched as she picked up her purse that was on the chair adjacent to her, and observed her as she started to look for something. Only moments later, she took out a ticket and handed it to him. “I’m pretty sure you’re a nice guy and I don’t mind giving anyone a free ticket if it means they get to hear the flute. You have to come, alright?”
He took the ticket from her hand and smiled as he put it in the front of his apron. “Uh, alright. I guess I’ll go.”
She clapped her hands and smiled at him. “Great!”
A moment of silence fell between them as she continued sipping her coffee. The silence was broken though by a question from Tiffany. “How long have you worked here? I mean, I’ve actually been coming to this cafe every Tuesday now for the past three months and haven’t seen you once.”
“I’ve been here for about a year or two and I actually only work on Wednesday, Thursday, and Fridays. Maybe that’s the reason you’ve never seen me around.”
She slowly nodded her head, taking in all this information. “Oh... Maybe I should come here more often on those dates. That means I’ll be able to see you, right?”
“Yeah, you’ll pretty much see me. And I’m usually the one taking the orders so there’s a higher chance I’ll be serving you.” He chuckled and slowly arose from his seat as he glanced at the clock that was behind her head.
“I actually have to close this place up now. I really hate to kind of kick you out but there are store policies I have to keep.”
Tiffany arose from the seat and drank the rest of her caramel coffee and licked off the foam that was on the top of her mouth. “No, no, it’s fine, I understand. Well then, I guess I’ll have to be headed off now too.” She put down some money on the table and headed towards the door.
“Oh, you really don’t have to pay, I said it was on the house-”
“No, I think I do have to pay. Like I said, it’s something of my morals, I couldn’t sleep tonight if I didn’t.”
“Oh, alright then. But next time, I’ll be sure to get you a slice of cake or something extra for you.”
“No, it’s quite alright Kyuhyun-ssi.”
He snapped up at his name being called. How did she know him?
“Uh, how did you-?”
“You’re wearing a name tag, you silly.” She started clapping and laughing as she saw his very confused expression. And when he turned over he saw those beautiful crescent moons again that formed on her eyes.
“Oh right. Well then, do you mind if I ask for your name?”
She stopped in the middle of opening the door and turned back around to him. “My name is Tiffany Hwang and it was very nice to meet you.”
With that, she headed out the door and walked towards her car. Before she got in, she waved to him one last time and he waved back. She left and as he was closing up the shop for the night, he stopped midway and thought of her crescent moon shaped eyes and the way her laugh sounded so angelic. He would definitely, be seeing her more often.
