Hey all. I'm looking into buying a mac before I graduate, and I'm wondering if there's anybody out there in livejournal land that has purchased a refurbished mac directly from Apple. If so, how was the experience? Did it die? Is there a greater likelihood of something like that happening? Generally they are $300-$400 cheaper than buying the same ( Read more... )

honestly, with the new intel chip, i'd say its worth a couple hundred extra bucks to buy a new MacBook or MacBook Pro. Do you do a lot of video editing? Because it not, you're probably okay with just the macbook. Whatever you get though, upgrade the RAM to at least a gig. I've never done the refurbished thing, but I don't know how the warranty works. One of the potential down sides to an apple is that it is harder to get replacement parts elsewhere, and to install them - however applecare takes really good care of you, as long as you don't throw your computer down a flight of stairs.

I will be doing a lot of video editing, actually.

I think you can buy the warranty the same as you can with a new one... does that change your recommendation that I buy new?

Don't get a laptop for video editing. Everyone I know who knows anything about computers tells me this. I might not take that advice, but there it is.

I'll also be living in a closet in New York City and will have to access internet at coffee shops, so a desktop computer isn't really an option, and I WILL be making video, so meh. But yeah, I've heard that advice. And I'm not taking it. Thanks, though, Sophie.

Well, do you remember Anna from a couple years ago? She'll be back. And a girl from Australia named Kirby. Hopefully Jay will get everything taken care of and be back like he says he will. Then there's an Evergreen kid named Colin, too. Plus soon-to-be-named program counselors.
