Refurbished Macs.

Hey all. I'm looking into buying a mac before I graduate, and I'm wondering if there's anybody out there in livejournal land that has purchased a refurbished mac directly from Apple. If so, how was the experience? Did it die? Is there a greater likelihood of something like that happening? Generally they are $300-$400 cheaper than buying the same thing new. Any advice?

Also, I'm right to spend a little more for the new MacBook Pros over the PowerBooks, correct?
