Stolen from Borrowed from Inspired by ladymeg1:

According to this site, the #1 song on the day I was born was "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" by The Bee Gees. The is particularly ironic because the Bee Gees scare me. Truly. That one guy's voice just sort of makes my head hurt. I can't hear that high. I try to listen to a song (okay, I don't, but it ( Read more... )

I've never actually seen the whole movie, but I think I've seen a snippet where this song plays while John Travolta is walking down the street trying hard to look like he's a badass. The lyrics take on an extra layer of meaning if you think of them as making fun of the character for trying too hard.

Don't know what the NYT has to do with anything, though.

Still. BEST. SONG. EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I reject this assumption that I must be either a brother or a mother. In fact, depending on how deeply I choose to read the lyrics, I think I may have just been insulted. :)

Maybe that's why it made my head hurt. Even though I couldn't consciously process the words quickly enough, my subconscious absorbed that I was being called a mother f****r. Like with subliminal popcorn ads at the movies, but meaner.

Or maybe not. ;)

I thought for years that the #1 song the week I was born was "You've Got a Friend", written by Carole King. But your site says it's some Sly and the Family Stone song, and Googling reveals that Carole King never released the song as a single (it's on her album "Tapestry), and James Taylor released the song earlier in the year. WTF!? I was GROSSLY MISINFORMED!!!

Wow, could this comment be any longer?? jupiter29 February 24 2006, 17:24:48 UTC
Hmm, I don't know that song. Or at least I can't place it. Which is ironic, because I've always meant to listen to more Carole King songs. When I was younger, I always listened to the oldies station[1]. So Tapesty was just at the furthest edges of the playlist, chronologically, and I remember enjoying the songs every rare time I heard one. So I always meant to listen to the rest of the album, or see if she made any others. But I never did.

Wow, wasn't that a great story? :)

On a more positive note, I think she also wrote the theme to Gilmore Girls, which reminds me that I meant to send you an email. Although it wasn't about the Gilmore Girls, of course, because I am a man and I would never watch such a thing, or at least admit it publicly. :)

Look what you started. Aren't you sorry you ever brought it up?You have NO idea ( ... )

...you and I passed the "old" mark years ago. Huey Lewis is definitely oldies. I like him too. My favorite is the relatively obscure "Bad is Bad".

I actually have only listened to two songs on Tapestry and should listen to more. There was a song recorded by the Shirelles, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" They did it all boppy, kinda. Carole King wrote the song, and on Tapestry, she records it like a slow, sad ballad. I like her version better.

There's some good music in the 70s, but maybe they don't play it on the radio much. Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" is 70s, lots of Led Zeppelin is 70s. But DISCO is 70s, too. WOOOOOOOO!

OMG I LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVE this song! You mean you don't picture yourself walking down the street with this playing in the background as your theme song? Remember when they played in either Grumpy or Grumpier Old Men? That was hilarious.

I have been singing the words soooooo wrong for so many years. Whoops. It is now my personal mission to learn them all correctly!

You can not hate on the Bee Gees. Have you been drinking antifreeze?

I will (very sheepishly) admit that I occasionally find myself walking down the hall at work and think to myself "man, I'm walking particularly cool today" and I think there should be a band playing behind me. (*blush*) But it shouldn't be the Bee Gees. There is nothing cool about that voice. :)

What words were you singing? That could be a hundred times better than having the real ones stuck in my head the rest of the day. Share!

No antifreeze today, but there does appear to be a substantial theme developing in my journal of brains hurting! Of course, people that have read my journal for years will tell you that it was only a matter of time. I'm sure my posts have made brains ache before. :)

Let's get retarded! Ha! creamofwheat February 24 2006, 17:52:00 UTC
Ok...a lot of the words are just weird noises made in the Barry Gibb voice. Those are designated by "ehhh ohhh ahhh" or something like that. Here are some of them. Prepare to laugh.

Music loud and women warm

is...

You give love and ehhh, ohhhh ahhh..

We can try to understand

is...

We can try a one night stand

the New York Time's effect on man.

is...

do your act ahhh eehhh ohhhh ahhhhn

Feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin'

is...

Music City breakin' and everybody shakin'

Well now, I get low and I get high,
and if I can't get either, I really try.

is...

And I can't get in, the boobie try.

You know it's all right. It's OK.
I'll live to see another day.

is...

We can ahhhh ohhhh on the way

So in this case, the gutteral noises aren't even to cover words you don't know. The Bee Gees were actually recreating the "act". That is scary. :)

Hahahahaha. I like your version so much better. Every song is better with boobies!
