Karen, have you considered working as a bank teller? I worked as one through college and am doing so again now. At least here in the States, most places don't care whether or not you have a college degree (usually a high school diploma will do) AND some even offer tuition reimbursement if you end up going to school for something related.
I wish you all the best, because I understand how frustrating it can be to feel like you're stuck in a job that doesn't pay enough while at the same time you can't even help yourself do something about it!

I have loads of spare time because I live in a tiny ghetto town where it's impossible to find a job, so I could e-mail you job descriptions from your area or something. I dunno. Just something to think about.
two things you can do quickly. number one - call your bank.. and tell them you need to get more credit for school (scary and can be overwhelming). number two - call IE (providing you haven't quit your job.. arrange it to look like a layoff if you can) and say you wanna go to school. They may be willing to pay for the entire process!
