Heh. I just got an idea. Lilith and Castiel could be leading two factions. Ruby wants Sam to lead the demons, tho Lilith wants it for her own. Castiel's cadre of fallen angels want Dean to lead them. He's manipulating him to see if Dean is worthy of becoming their Lord. He doesn't want to admit it, but there's fewer of the Fallen than Lilith's demons. They're more powerful, but she has numbers.
That's true, about faith. Maybe the writers even went back and realized "Oh hey, there's totally an allusion back there!" with the whole "Dean's got an unfulfilled purpose" thing
