The Giant Burrowing Cockroach is the world's largest cockroach, and it is Australian, and it makes an excellent pet. You need a tank of damp sand for them, and they'll eat eucalyptus leaves. They don't mind being scooped out of the sand for scritches, and they may even make a soft hissing sound when stroked gently.
Oh, and you do not need to clean their tank because they are happy to live in poo, and they have happy symbiotic mites living on them, and they shed their shells and then *scoff them up*! Nom nom discarded shell!
I have had mice before (well, a suspected mouse, briefly), and I would much rather them!
Having said that, at least cockroaches don't *chew*.
I was v v brave today & extracted one from the kitchen with a glass & a piece of paper & chucked it out of the window. (They're small enough that they can cope with a 3-storey drop.)
