Then I said "Oatmeal? ARE YOU CRAZY?!"

I really don't like this idea that LiveJournal is being abandoned for Twitter and Tumblr, although I know the fact that I post all day on mine is sort of just helping that come true ( Read more... )

It would seem counter-intuitive that more specialised sites would take over over generalised sites, but maybe I should stop thinking of it like natural selection* and factor in the human "SHINEE NEW THING" quotient.

Ravens and the majority of corvids are generalists, like LiveJournal. On the other hand pretty much all birds of paradise are specialized, hence their rareness and tendency only to be found in certain areas of the world. And...I just lost my bird metaphor.

That's a pretty good analysis, even if I don't like it... and do intend to stay around here as long as it goes, if I can. I agree with Julian too... the other places feel so confining...
I still do get about 30 or 40 or so Friend's List entries per day here though, so while it's dwindled to about half, it's still a bunch to read and comment on... I just hope people keep reading, and... also keep writing stuff here so as to stay in touch. I peek at the other ones now and then, but I skidaddle as fast as I can..

I agree with eikenboom, I think this stuff is still new and exciting to people and that's a lot of it. With comics folks there's been a mass exodus of LJ but there are still a bunch who still post all their stuff on LJ-- I feel like the people who say LJ is dead are making that happen.

I love twitter, both because it's the best way to keep up with a lot of things (bands and stuff, and what friends are doing), but also because I can post all the little stupid stuff without the weightiness of making an ~entry~ about it. But twitter is so much more public that you also have to watch what you say, and nothing has yet matched LJ for that, the ability to have varying levels of privacy in what you write. As long as that's true (and, like you say, the flexibility of HTML, etc), I think LJ will always have a place.

I rambled there, but doo doo doo I agree with you?

I agree - I think the "newness" is still a factor and that LJ's ability to protect entries and its HTML flexibility is a huge plus. I still think it has its place and that, over time, people will migrate back.

I still like LJ and use it a lot - I like tumblr too, but for me I want to journal and LJ is the best place for that.

Seems like most people are bailing to Facebook, which I despise.

But it's sort of a vicious cycle. If you post here and get 2 comments, and post the same thing there, and get 20... well... follow the positive reinforcement.

Makes me sad.

Yeah, maybe my distaste of Faecbook was more subtle than I intended (perhaps I should've done more than just deliberately misspell it), despite how my mum is able to get in contact with family that way...but I understand, I do often see screenshots of what seem to be rather hilarious Faecbook conversations that I had missed out on thanks to my refusal to join the site, not to mention that half the time someone sends a photo to me that's on Faecbook I am not allowed to even view the damn thing.

Sort of like what I said at the end of the entry that I seem to be missing out on a lot of stuff from my friends who seem to really love posting blurbs to Twitter and not much else...makin' me want to make a new account. Meh. Twitter is not as forgiving to verbose folk as Tumblr is...(you can post long stuff, there's just no real guarantee people won't scroll over it in favour of a funny animated gif or any form of shinee picture, really.)
