Healthy Hot Drinks - Help Me Find One?

Nov 11, 2012 16:27

Okay, a query for my LJ collective mind (paralleled from FB): I'm cold, and want a hot drink. I've been drinking cider, but that's too sugary for multiple cups. My diabetes has not gone away, and I must not pander to my sweet tooth, lest I unleash another set of unhappy health problems.

My usual hot drink is tea, but I'm to avoid tea (antioxidants ( Read more... )

If you have to avoid antioxidants, you're unfortunately going to have trouble with pretty much any plant-based compound, or at least all the ones I can think of. I think your best bet would be to ask your doctor this one, since they'll have a better idea of just what dosage is going to be problematic.

Hmmm, that might be tough. Wikipedia tells me that rooibos is high in antioxidants, so that's out. I'm not a big fan of herbals, but Celestial Seasonings Mandarin Orange Spice is decent. And, of course, there are decaf versions of real tea. A grocery store tea like Lipton decaf is drinkable, I guess, but for myself, I prefer to go to a good tea shop and see what's available.

Ah, here's a page on the Celestial Seasonings web site where you can find which of their ingredients are antioxidant.

Almost every tea is an anti oxidant. I'm going to check again with my doctor and see what she wants me to do.

If you can get away with decaf tea (after talking with your doctor!), Gretchen really likes the Barry's Decaf Tea. Sadly, it isn't easy to find, but you can get it on Amazon.

Try it! Hot lemonade tastes entirely different from cold lemonade, and is -wonderful-.

Although, of course, lemonade, sugarless or not, is never going to be entirely sugar-less, as lemons have more sugar than one might think.

A glass of warm milk is a traditional bedtime relaxer. You could add a couple of drops of flavoring (almond flavoring might be a good choice, perhaps with a bit of orange, or mint, or whatever way your tastes run ( ... )

Chocolate is an antioxidant AND anticoagulant. Not my first choice for you right now, personally.

The first time I visited Britain I learned that tea was everywhere and unavoidable. At the time I was not a fan of either tea or coffee. Being essentially forced to drink hot tea I came to realize that hot tea and coffee were just flavorants to make hot water palatable.

Bottom line, you may want to test out plain hot water in a nice ceramic mug. Besides, it is a cheap experiment.

Hot water in a mug is at least a hand warmer!
