What gillo said. It sounds trite, but it really is true. They know when they've had enough. I can't describe it-- Max did that, and it tore me apart, but he was just so tired and he wasn't going to get better, and he knew it. You'll know. Really.

I"m going to echo the above. I've lost two dogs now and I can tell you that they will let you know. From your description he isn't ready yet.
