Thoughts on possible VA Tour route?

May 02, 2009 23:22

Been staring at the map a lot. What do you guys (and girls) think of this?

Saturday (day 1)
VB heads across US 58 while RIC either heads down 5 and dog-legs onto 58 or takes US 1 down. Everyone meets up around Emporia South Hill and continue a little further to Kerr lake for camp.

58 isn't a bad road, especially on bikes. Good first day stretch ( Read more... )

I enjoy this plan. If no one else rides in mommy van I'll probably just stay in Waynesboro once we get here. I guess I should choose a book on tape since I may not have any company.

It's not the Bell Jar is it? You've been trying to push that on me a few times. Since I will be driving a vehicle it will probably be best if the story doesn't make me want to drive off a cliff.

Actually, NPR podcasts are the new audiobooks.
I'm addicted to This American Life and have a nice backlog if you're interested.

Another enjoyable trip would be to go out to Chincoteague, I know I spelled that wrong, the horse place, you know. The bikes would probably scare the horses but it's really pretty there. It's a long drive and would take us way out of our way this trip but sometime I should like to go back there. We could also go by Cape Charles and pick up beach glass.

sounds like a pretty good rough layout. Main thing I question is Thursday's ride on 250. I've driven that in a car and didn't find it that interesting. When talking to Chelsea she said it was horrible on a bike. Nothing but straight and up and down, up and down. Might want to look into new route to Sherondo... now where did I put that map?!

Sherando is on route 340 which goes to Elkton in one direction or Stuarts draft in the other. You could look at the Merck medical company, railroad tracks, and the Coors brewing company in one direction or a lot of cows in the other. I think 250 going up/down Afton is cool for bikes. There is a turn that practically spins you 360 degrees by the end of it and you drive underthe overpass that Professor Kline painted. But I guess that depends if you come from that direction on 250.

New concern... I'm not too sure how the scooter will do on the B.R. Pkwy. After going to Stanardsville and back, I've realized that on large hills the speed cuts back significantly. Also, the strain burns a lot more gas than normal so I'd have to have an extra can of gas since stations and exits are few and far between on the Parkway.

Also, Ann and Nycole took that route last week and said that with all of the rain we've had there are lots of places where the road was completely washed over with dirt and gravel from the mountain. Not a good thing for bikes. We may want to look at an alternate route in case the Parkway is too rough on the scoots...
