Homefront report for me:

Me: Nothing really to report on the health front; a lot of juggling on doctors visits of various sorts, and starting to seriously get involved in the work front again. I’m spending a huge amount of personal time on the basement - Susan’s Memorial Day deadline for cleaning it out is one I’m taking quite seriously, and there’s a lot of stuff getting ( Read more... )

Are you scanning the NatLamps before dumping them? I've been doing that with old Punch magazines and it gives me the best of both worlds, because I can still have them to read on whatever devices read pdfs, while only having to manage a few megabytes of data rather than cubic feet of paper.

The NatLamps are available as a pre-scanned package for around $50; I may just spring for that as a replacement. I agree that the scanned version is best, as you don't have the paper to lug around, etc.

From what I've read the commercial NatLamp version is pretty awful due to the poor quality of the scans.

*sigh* Well, it's about the best option I have at this point. I have waaaaay too much stuff to scan as is around here to eliminate the excess clutter, I can't set aside the time to scan those, too.

Try Freecycle--it's a great way to get rid of stuff that is still useful to someone. (Plus you don't have to take it anywhere--they come pick it up.)

Already belong to two big local ones, but things like magazines usually aren't of much interest. I've unloaded all sorts of stuff that way otherwise.

there are a number of libraries that have SF collections. unknown if any of them collect zines that reflect the science fiction and fan culture, but it might be worth a googlehunt.

And donating to a library may get you a tax deduction. Check with a tax expert.

How about checking and seeing if any local groups, fannsh or not, are intersted in the material.

oic, magazines! well, still. someone might want them for a collection in a library if they are in good condition... or take em to half price books who will give you SOMETHING for them, even a little teeny bit, and possibly recycle them as well.

The medical bill stuff is a nightmare. I maxing out fast and while most of my stuff is covered to one degree or another, the constant monitoring of the bills to make sure they are correct sometimes falls by the wayside when other life stuff comes up. It's a little easier now because we have a more expensive but better managed insurance and my prescription plan is mostly good these days.

As for the purging? I bit the bullet and started dumping a lot of things. It hurts sometimes but I figure I am being realistic-I only keep what I actually use and refer to and if it can be easily scanned I should actually be doing that.

Take care of yourselves and Mere!

Agree on all of this.

It's not as if they drop the ball all the time, but there's enough money in the bills and stuff that I don't want to be stuck paying for the wrong stuff, etc.

As to purging - you get to a point where it's necessary. The worst is when you have to figure out what's manageable and what you really do need to keep.

Which issues? Roughly, I mean. Earliest years? Mid-70s? Late?
