There are drawbacks:

Being unable to get around very well is a PITA all over the place, and especially on vacation. Wheelchairs (unpowered) are fine for travel on flat surfaces, but not up and down hills of any sort. I was lucky because the folks at Kentucky Down Under helped out with their own golf carts and whatnot to get me in and out of bad situations, but ( Read more... )

Wow, I haven't been there in years. I grew up in North Carolina and we'd often stop there and buy our illegal fireworks.

Great Elvis!
YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT PEDRO'S SOUTH OF THE BORDER?
Holy crap, they have signs for it a thousand miles away.
Words cannot describe the experience of going there.
The sheer politically incorrectness of it all.
The thousands of tons of plastic that went into not only it'd structures, but the garbage they sell as souvenirs.

re handicapped in KY:

A friend of mine who lives in KY had a problem getting a handicapped parking permit. He has a condition that has limited his mobility and was expected to kill in him in 18 months. (He has amazed his doctors by lasting a few years)and applied for a handicapped permit. He was denied because with an expected demise in 18 months he was not meeting the requirement that his handicap would last 2 years or more.

Mine was for six months, and was very easy to get.

Basically, I brought the Illinois form in to the wound doctor, and he filled out his part, and my MIL took it into the Drivers' License place with my Driver's License. (A state ID would have worked as well.) The thing's renewable, and is presently good until the fall. Very easy so long as the doctor filled out the form.

That was me that made the post about getting a handicapped sticker. Darn system logged me out before I posted. Grumble, grumble.

The standards for getting a handicapped permit are set by each state and vary a lot. I suspect that in KY going in in person to apply counts against you. If you are healthy enough to come in you don't need the permit.

Actually there might very well be a separatist Southern Amish group with completely different rules. Each community sets it's own standards as to what is and is not allowed. One may say that having a phone or electricity in your business is fine (and then everyone in the commmunity will come by to make phone calls and heat up their burritos in the microwave ...)

I do, however, doubt the validity of a latex and memory foam mattress no matter from what Amish commuity!

The first Rittenhouse in America was also the first Memmonite bishop, and while I'm not a Mennonite, I was raised around a ton of variations on plain folk, who are NOT all Amish, not by a long shot. See these Wiki articles on Anabaptists, Bretheren and Dunkards.

I read a book on Rumspringa a few months ago that went into great detail on various aspects of the Amish culture. It was all very interesting, but I think I'll stick to my happy little Pagan ways, thank you!

Ah, that's the word I was looking for (Rumspringa)! Thanks.
