Library's first reference librarian, Steve Stangle, dies

The "friendly man at the reference desk" at the Main Library has died.

Steve Stangle, the first reference librarian for the St. Johns County library system's main facility in St. Augustine, died Dec. 17 at his home at the age of 50.

Library system director Mary Jane Little spoke on behalf of the entire library system staff in expressing deep sadness for the loss of a fellow staff member.

Many came to know him as "the friendly man at the reference desk" who greeted patrons when they first entered the Main Library, says Little.

"Steve had many fans among our staff and patrons, and he will be dearly missed," Little said. "He made an impact on many people, and he will always be remembered as one of the friendliest and most customer service oriented members of our library staff."

Mr. Stangle came to St. Johns County from Ohio, in January 1988. Little said he was the first reference librarian for the Main Library.Staff and the public are invited to visit the Main Library to write in a memory book that has been made available to share stories and memories about Mr. Stangle.

Funeral services are planned at 10 a.m. Thursday at San Sebastian Catholic Church, State Road 16. Burial will follow in San Lorenzo Cemetery.

A memorial reception at the Main Library will follow burial.

Flowers are gratefully accepted, or those wishing may make a contribution in his memory to the St. Augustine Humane Society, 1665 Old Moultrie Road, St. Augustine, 32084.

Survivors include one sister, Toby Berkun, Downers Grove, Ill.; and other relatives.
