While I believe the Buckley quote is disingenuous at best... on the flip side... we still have another year to go... perhaps by this time next year we'll have managed to flatten Baghdad as much as we did Tokyo and Berlin. I mean... not only is he comparing two drastically different styles of war... he's not even using the same timeframes. Three years after Pearl Harbor we were probably less safe in Berlin and Tokyo than we are in Baghdad today. I'm just saying.

In WW2, we were willing to do a lot of stomp-em-flat things that nobody would happily countenance today.

Imagine the reaction if Baghdad had gone up in nuclear fire. Or if we'd arclight-struck the entire country.

Not that this makes me any happier about what's going on now. And no, the new evidence that Sadly Insane had, in fact, still been in pursuit of WMD technology, doesn't make any difference.

There's a recent TV movie around where Baghdad does go up in nuclear fire...it was from a year or two before the war.

It didn't take a genius to see that Saddam wated WMDs. We just didn't realive how much the man was a prisoner of his own PR, and that the existing stuff had hampered his people so much that he couldn't get anywhere with what he had. They didn't dare tell him that they couldn't do it, and they kept feeding him BS until he gacked.

You reminded me that I have a review copy of The Ten Commandments around here somewhere that I should watch before April rolls around. I am curious about it.
