This is from 2001, eh? That's the same year that Andy Duncan published his story "Senator Bilbo", which also drew a connection (albeit slightly differently) between the two Bilbos. It's in Starlight 3.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that immediately thought of that story! It was also featured as a story on Podcastle back in November 2008 and remains one of my favorite stories they've broadcast.

I have long thought that t6oo many people ignore the racism that is not hidden well in LOTR. All the orcs and goblins are automatically pro Sauron? And the elves are uniformally good? Of course the dwarves are accurately protrayed but the men are not. Oh well, this will doubtless be addressed in the big musical play planned on the search by the surviving orcs for a place to settle. I am looking forward to seeing the production of "Orclahoma".
