Mattresses are things that I think should never be skimped on- I mean, over a 10-15 year lifespan, paying an additional few cents for a much higher chance of having an excellent night's sleep is one of the best bargains one can get.

Sure. I have no problem with paying $$$ for a good night's
sleep.

But if I can save money and get the same good night's sleep I'm
all for it.

But I can't seem to determine whether I'd be saving money by
buying now or whether all the 'incredible savings' ads for
mattresses (and other things) are the usual hype, and I'd end
up paying as much as I would have last year (or next year)
in real dollars, or whether the discounts are real.

Well, I was more thinking that if you happened to find the perfect mattress now, it's worth a couple pennies a night to lock it in and buy it now, as opposed to taking the risk that the model will go out of production or the company goes belly up or something. But I guess that also assumes that you've got sufficient storage space for an unused mattress/boxspring/etc in the house.

One thing they've been discussing lately is the possibility of entering a period of deflation. If that happens everythings going to spiral cheaper, and more and more people will be asking themselves the same question you are, about everything. Do you really want to be responsible for starting the deflationary period ;) (j/k -- I may be young, but I'm not THAT stupid!!!).

Personally, I would say to buy it. Productivity and just plain quality of life are worth it.

{this is coming from someone who almost never gets a good nights sleep due to uncomfortable sleeping arrangements}

I've telling my home-buying friends for the past two years or so that this is a terrible time to buy. Did I burst the housing bubble?

YAY!!!! Now we all have someone to blame.... LMAO..

I always knew it wasn't the blue monkies living in my socks.... They do like to mess w/ stuff, but the housing bubble and stock market were a little outta their reach, I think....

Almost everything has gotten cheaper (in real dollars) or better over time, hasn't it? For some products, there are predictable seasonal changes, but over the course of years I can't think of any consumer purchase (i.e. not investment) which you'd've been better off buying early ( ... )
