nostalgia party

It's funny, I feel like I'm constantly struggling in this new fannish reality of multiple platforms to figure out how to communicate, how to make new fannish connections, how to maintain my old ones. I have a tumblr, joyfulseeker there as well as here as well as on AO3, because though I feel a bit sheepish about my current username I am nothing so ( Read more... )

I don't know, but god I hope we aren't still on tumblr in five years. It's just so unappealing. I hope we back down a bit from this level of shouting into the void.

But the kids these days, they may not want the same things as me. ;)

See, it's been kind of interesting for me to see people who do tumblr well, who seem to get a lot out of it, people that I've known from LJ days of yore who went from posting not at all hardly, for years, on LJ, to posting multiple times a day on tumblr. I can think of crimsonclad and helenish just off the top of my head, but there are also others who I think of as tumblring in a way I admire, in a way where it doesn't seem to be shouting out into the void. That said, one of my other reservations about tumblr is the way it is so publicly referenced, to the point where I don't really feel comfortable putting much about myself on there, aside from stuff like, I like this hockey player, I have strong opinions about stamped knives versus forged ones. That sort of constraining of expression makes it not so useful to me in trying to talk to people.

The fact that in five years we arrived at animated GIFs as the main communication mode on the internet is sort of baffling. Who knows where we'll go next!

I have no idea, but I hope we've managed to find a focal point by then. Because twitter, tumblr, etc... they seem ok but only for very specific forms of communication. I like LJ because it's more central (you have communities) and also your own space. I don't get the same sense of community in the other platforms, even punctual collaboration seems hard.

Yeah, the only places I've ever co-written or collaboratively written stuff was in email or in LJ comments. We shall see! Wherever we go, I hope the interface is easy to learn, because I am CLEARLY lazy on things like that.

Everything seems really spread out now. I like how LJ used to be. :/

Some strange force must have moved through those with a fannish bent, because I and several other LJ folk have recently tried to make a point of posting and reading more here for the very reason that other places seem so diffuse and so micro-focused. I use Twitter for lots of things, but mostly talking about hockey, and I don't hardly use tumblr at all except to laugh at funny pictures.

I miss the sort of connections that were forged here. I miss having the space to ruminate on whatever I want for as long as I want, and feel generally aware of whom I'm allowing to read it--whether they care or not, they're unlikely to come in out of left field with something scary and unwanted.

I joked with another friend that we should spur a Back to LJ/DW movement. And I think it's begun!

This. Yes. I really miss the sense of community and dear god actually discussing things.
