Resource: Captain Frederick Marryat - RN ghostbuster!

When asked what genre my original writing is, I should reply that it's "Age of Sail" adventure with humour and mystery and drama and gay romance and supernatural elements. I should, but I don't, because the next question will be: "QUOI?" and so I've settled for either "I write Georgian ghost stories in a naval seeting" or "Penny Dreadfuls which are ( Read more... )

Ok, before I get serious: "and his Majesty, used to the charms of Mrs. Fitzherbert (ah, the gossip of ye olden days!) was not amused. Much yelling ensued." was frikkin hilarious. Much chortling ensued. That is all.

But! I must say, I almost instinctively link AoS and supernatural themes - perhaps its from growing up in Nova Scotia, ripe with ghosty tales of the sea and having that Bluenoser blood in me, but then again, maybe its from PotC. ^^ Considering my own opinions on such things as ghosts, and considering the fact that anyone who knows the sea, knows that feeling that there must be more than what there seems to be... I'm likely to believe the first.

But PotC undeniably has something to do with it as well. ^^

Georgian ghost stories works nicely, though. ^^ As do your Penny Dreadful line.

Part of that feeling you describe is, in my opinion, the seemingly endless depth of the sea. Just like eternity, it's almost impossible to imagine, and so is the "afterlife", if one believes in it. I'd also say that AoS and ghostly tales make a good match - after all, that's what I write! - but I learned that this isn't true for many a reader. I guess I'll have to live with the fact that I'll never sell millions of books (now what a surprise.) ;)

I liked the supernatural aspects of POTC, at least in the first part. "Attack of the 50ft Calypso", on the other hand... not so.

Georgian ghost stories works nicely, though. ^^ As do your Penny Dreadful line.

Thank you! Now I only have to find a way to get the m/m context in there, and I'll be happy. It's not easy if there's no shelf your work fits on.

Yes, perhaps that it. *sighs* I can't even understand myself, some days. In my opinion, it would depend on which aspect teh story was based off of, like, I dunno if I'd like a horror/supernatural/ghost story set in the AoS half as much I know I like any AoS story with supernatural elements/themes/ghost stories. But that's just me. It could easily be vice-versa for others ( ... )

I can't even understand myself, some days. I'd say you're not alone with that. I guess that's true for all of us ( ... )

Good to hear you enjoyed the story! I discovered Marryat through his drawings, and I've read about the Brown Lady of Raynham Hall long before I started to do research on the AoS. I was delighted to find his name in such an unexpected context, the man is really full of surprises!

Sounds like you write what I love to read.

In that case it's time for a commercial break:

That's a fascinating tale! So did she stay away?

She stayed away for about sixty or seventy years, I think. The famous picture of her was taken in 1936, and there were some reported sightings in the 1960s.

BTW, is your collection of Georgian ghost stories available for purchase yet?

I'm working on a novel that's also supernatural and takes place in the same era -- but mine is a romance novel intended for wide distribution so unfortunately I have to color within the lines and make it very easy for anyone to understand and of course, it has to have a happy ending. "Thrust and nipple books" as other writers describe them. :) It's a lot of fun though.

I've changed my schedule and will publish PSCL first. The collection will be out in summer/autumn. It's postponed, not canceled. :)

"Thrust and nipple books"...? AHAHA! I like that! Best of luck with it, and tons of sold copies!
