The fact that people who have criticized Dubya are still running around on the streets perhaps is the most compelling point against him "taking away our freedoms".

A point that occurred to me the very time I heard my first detailed over-arching Grand Evil Conspiracy Theory, as a teenager. I remember saying "But aren't you afraid I'm part of the Evil Conspiracy, in which case you've just signed your death warrant?" At which point he reassured me that he knew I wasn't.

Heh. Our wetworks squad took care of him.

No, they didn't, but it struck me that there's a certain degree of non-seriousness to such beliefs :)
