Its so hard to tell tone from an email. So, even if your gut tells you differently, try to think that she sent the smiley face as a thank you for thinking of her.

But honestly, the 'without you' was unnecessary. Ida cat is here to give you a snuggle!

I know she must be all over the place at the moment, but that was just shitty bad manners. You did the right thing and I'm just sorry she couldn't see that and respond graciously.
