There's a chance he'll make it. We've had birds in that tiny that survived. The key is getting them warmed up and fed properly.
(And I just love how the rehabbers know someone "just a little bit better". Lordy. They're either songbird certified or not, full or not. If they're full, that's understandable given the time of year. But for the most part, they should have just given you a list of a bunch of people and said "they're all songbird - hopefully one will have room".)
We have one baby bird here. LOL We'd have loved to take it! If, you know, you all weren't in CA and us in NC. It makes up for the crazy number of possums, squirrels and bunnies we have right now. (I HATE BUNNIES. Thought I'd share. Baby birds are a dream compared to mammals.)
He might make it. He certainly had a better chance than the others. Millie found some similar chicks in a different part of the complex that had been pushed out of the nest and were very dead, this morning. Our temperatures shot up to around 100 degrees over the last two days, and I guess parent birds were pushing the current guys out so they could reset their biological clocks and get going on another clutch that might grow up with more amiable weather.
We often joke that the only thing Millie really cares about is finding more "chickens" to eat like the green one in our living room who teases her. Maybe it's true. (We won't go over what she tried to do to the "chickens" when she found them this morning. But it wasn't eat them.)
The Hunt for the Space Heater was a story that took place back in February of last year, when our previous bird Hoggle was ill. It was February and they STILL looked at us like we were crazy for wanting to buy a heater. We tried a K-Mart, a Target, the Walmart (out of desperation), two Home Depots and then the Lowe's. There was a cold snap about two weeks before that, so maybe the small stocks of heaters in the area were already sold out.
We're glad we could help it through the night ... but it was a REALLY rough night. Just one night, and we were DONE. The whole children thing has been put in a much more terrifying light, now.
Hehe. We've had the nurse a baby animal episode thing a few times. It's rough.
But generally speaking, baby animals do not entirely equal the same thing as taking care of your child. They usually don't start falling out of trees until much later in life.
