To my credit, I didn't just jump into "God Fuck the Queen!" or anything. We were joking and being soldiers both of us, teasing one another, talking crap about what's going on around us, /then/ I did the American Revolution joke.

He did smile, at least, when after he got All Serious, I said, "What? Too soon?" - so I recovered it somewha...

Well, I think the part that's offensive is the "hiding, embarrassed" part. Reworking that, it could work.

What he should have done was walked up to the guys and said, "Hey, it's the 4th of July. Shouldn't you all be across the pond, shaking your fists and saying, 'To hell with your independence, give us back our continent!!' Let's go grab a bottle and call it a truce already, huh?"
