Kim smiles her thanks and makes a mental note to only have one glass of wine tonight, two at the most. She doesn't mind at all going out with John, she just doesn't want to mess up what they've begun. She likes it too much, although she finds that she still blushes and feels turned on whenever she thinks about that night...

She smiles. "Yes, it does. I really love it, but of course it's more than Chicago itself. I really like the people I've met here too."

He grins at her. "Is that so? Well...I would guess the people who have met you in Chicago will all be glad you've decided to stay."

He looks into her eyes. "I'm thrilled, really. I was afraid I was going to have to move to Boston..."

Color tinges her cheeks. "Oh, stop that." She's distracted when the waiter brings their drinks, asking John if he'd like to taste the wine before he pours it for them. She's surprised by the jolt she got when he said that and annoyed by the butterflies still messing around in her stomach.

He does taste the wine, and approves it before the waiter walks away. "What? You don't think I would?" He asks playfully, but it turns serious as he reaches for her hand again. "Because I would. If you left, there'd be no real reason for me to stay."

"John... no. I don't expect you to uproot your entire life, and your job and everything just because of me. I mean... I'd feel bad if you did that. But glad to because I want... Well, it doesn't matter anyway. Like I said, I'm staying for now."

"Right. Well. I would have followed you, if you decided to leave. Just so you know." He smiles and takes a sip of the wine. "This is good stuff," he says softly.

She tastes hers as well. "Yes, it is. I certainly hope the food measures up or I'll be very disappointed in you, Dr. Carter."

"I hope so too," he grins, a twinkle of mischief in his eyes. "But I've never been disappointed, and this better not be the time I am...Because I'd hate to disappoint a pretty lady like you..."

The rest of the meal passes in much the same manner, although this time Kim watches herself and only drinks two glasses of wine. There's a pleasant warmth throughout her body by the time they're finished, but she's not even tipsy, and finds much relief in that fact. If she was, she knows there would be a very good chance of repeating what happened last time; there's no denying that. She knows what the looks they've been giving each other mean, or could mean.

Carter forced himself to take the wine slowly, pacing himself according to Kim, though his body craved more. He knew he couldn't allow himself to give in.

"Care for a stroll by the water, my lady?" He asked her after the bill was paid and they were headed out.

"All right. That would be nice." Nice and safe, and a little romantic too. She isn't opposed to that.

The night air is slightly cool, and very refreshing. Kim lifts her hair off the back of her neck. "This feels wonderful."

"It does, doesn't it?" Carter laughs. "I love to see you smile," he says and he means it.

SHe looks so...perfect beautiful to him, with her hair held up, and the way the moonlight catches in her eyes. She's unlike anyone he's ever known.

"I'm falling in love with you, Kim. I already have."

Her hair drops, as does her hand, and she looks at him. It's not a shock to hear those words, she finds, and she only looks at him for a moment.

"I know," she says at last. "I feel the same way. I just can't help it."

Carter nods, looks out over the horizon ahead for a moment, then back to her. Everything about her is, as far as he's concerned, absolutely perfect.

He doesn't quite know what to say now, because the moment is so emotionally charged. And he doen't want to ruin it, or dampen the mood.

Bu he feels like he should say something to give the moment the proper recognition it deserves. He opens his mouth, but there just aren't words. He can only smile and stare at her.

"Well, come on. Are you going to just stand there all night gaping like a fish?" With that she turns away from him and starts walking, a smile hovering on her lips, wondering what he'll do.
