Triduum 2008

This weekend?

Friday Jessica and I went to Good Friday services. It was snowing lightly and we walked to church. Good Friday services nowadays make me actually sad when I'm there and thinking about it and all. After we left it was still snowing; we got a little less than four inches from the edge of the storm that passed nearby. We walked ( Read more... )

You should get this! I have it (or one much like it) on my hallway wall. 28,000+ clues!

I wonder how long, on average, that takes to complete.

I do too. I know that I've had it up for a long, long time and I rarely do any of it. I have tons of Crossword Puzzle books and they're usually more like for when I'm on break at work or riding the bus or plane or whatever, it seems. My roommate bet me a cookie the other day that I couldn't finish the NYT crossword puzzle she'd started. News for her: She owes me a cookie!

I'm pretty much a crossword novice, but the book we got is arranged in six sections with Monday at the front and Saturday at the back. By the time we do 20 Mondays, hopefully we'll be ready to move on to the Tuesdays.

A lot of times with church stuff you're supposed to sing forth in joy and whatnot, and yeah, it's nice and all but I don't know if I've ever felt really joyous. However, I think I attended my first Good Friday service in Urbana and same year The Passion of the Christ came out. The pastor there had a really good service; dark and depressing, turned off the lights in the place. And then a truly graphic portrayal of the final hours in that movie (though I don't know what inaccuracies it may have) really made the situation more palpable for me. My eyes can start getting moist just really thinking about it.

Besides, I'm not a Luthern, I'm a Lutheran. ZING!

Wordplay is one of my favorite movies, but I saw it on the big screen.

Have you seen The King of Kong? Wordplay was good, but as far as game documentaries go, TKoK is the best that I've seen.

I haven't seen it. What I liked most about Wordplay (although I liked a lot of different things about it) was the moments where you were being given a few clues to fill in, and behind you was the puzzle being filled in during the rate they do. I think it's rare a movie that engages certain kinds of quick thinking skills (the big screen really helped for that feeling, too).

Yeah, it was amazing to see them do those. Jessica and have done three Mondays in our book and we average about 40 minutes right now. But I think as you do more you know the way the authors of these think. However, I find that aspect is what kinda put me off on crosswords before. Those guys in Wordplay would get a clue and I could think of two things that would fit in the space but they'd just write down one right away and it'd be correct. You have to know the secret handshake sometimes.
