I think technology is awesome, but I also think we have the responsibility to teach our children that they don't have to be wired in all the time (hold your wireless jokes, please). ;)

My dad is, for all intents and purposes, computer illiterate. He knows enough to check MSN (cuz it's the homepage) and to play Hearts. If I tell him to google something he looks at me like I said a dirty word. I think he finally got an email maybe three motnhs ago...and that was only to get river updates from the DNR. My grandmother doesn't have a computer, never learned to use one, and has no desire to get one. Do you know how refreshing it is to walk into her house and know that there's no compy, no internet cloud hovering, no white noise of monitor buzzing in the background?

There is a real world out there! More real than World of Warcrack, I promise! ;)

B: I boggle all the time about the storage media available. Remember when a computer with a 512 mb drive was big? And now I have an SD card with 4 gigs of space, and you can get thumb drives of 64 and more, the hard drive in this laptop has 500 gigs, and you can get a 1.5 or 2 terabyte hard drive for not all that much money, relatively speaking. My brain, it 'splodes.

C: my 3 year old (ok, almost 4. But 3 for now.) likes to send text messages and play games on my iPhone. I shall let that statement speak for itself, because it says a lot.

I remember that my first computer had a 12G hardrive, and I installed a secondary that had 13G. I also remember thinking there was no way I would ever fill that much space. :P

I just bought a netbook with a 160G hard drive, and an external drive with 500G (paid $70 for it). I STILL WORRY I'M NOT GOING TO HAVE ENOUGH SPACE. *facepalm* You know, because those Word documents, they add up so quickly. ;)

Maybe the generation of kids who've always known the internet will NEVER KNOW THE FEAR OF RUNNING OUT OF STORAGE SPACE! Whereas you and I will always be afraid of it, unless we have the absolute largest drives commercially available, and maybe even then. (wouldn't know. I keep wishfully eyeballing the 1, 1.5, and 2 tb drives...)

I will admit that I have wishlisted a WD Passport 1tb drive, just as a backup for my backup. I also would like to get one of those Dell Studio Hybrids (because everyone knows you need a desktop AND a laptop!). ;)

Am I the only one who doesn't trust the cloud? I can remember the world of pre-internet, and when I see all those techno-kids nattering on about Chrome I think "No! Don't trust the cloud!" I mean...geez, where does your stuff GO? What if the cloud fails? What if you can't get to your documents because you didn't back them up to your seven different hard drives? WHAT IF GOOGLE GETS HACKED AND WE HAVE TO GO BACK TO AOL?

My kid has a cell phone. It's just a phone--text and calls and she can send pictures. No internet. If she's going on the internet, it's going to be when I'm sitting ten feet behind her with a full view of her monitor. (Yes, she has her own computer--it's my old one. Also, do you think I'm going to give mine up to give her surf-time??)

I think many parents are spectacularly stupid about technology. But then they are idiots about books, tech that has been around a VERY LONG TIME, because I refuse to believe that Twilight would have been read by so many pre-teens if their parents had known what was in there.

Please God, let them have given a damn had they bothered to check...
