So, the other day I happened to come across an article online about a study done linking certain personality traits to finger length ( Read more... )

3. Lesbians tend to have longer ring fingers than index fingers.

I SURE DO!

(Also, the thing about math vs. verbal skills correllates with the studies about more butch women and men having a better sense of direction in general than femme women and men. I know from letting an endocrinologist friend of mine use me as a guinea pig that I have high testosterone levels, and I've got the way better visual etc. skills than verbal skills, the long index fingers, and the omg dykeyness!)

Also, as much as this stuff intrigues me, it also pisses me the hell off because it's just gonna be fodder for the "HEY WE CAN CURE TEH GAY" people.

But of course, if this material wasn't out there, they'd just find something else, so whatEVAH.

Yeah, one of the first things I thought of when I read the article about sexual orientation was "oh crap, someone is going to use this against the queer community". Although I suppose the argument could go two ways right? Don't these findings help refute the claim that sexual orientation is a choice?

That's really interesting about the sense of direction thing as well. I'd heard that men have a better sense of direction, it would make sense that that too is connected to testosterone levels. Glad to know you've got a good sense of direction :-)

Interesting...I have longer ring fingers than index fingers, so more fetal testosterone. As the various points apply to me:

1. More likely to suffer depression? Perhaps. I wouldn't classify my periodic malaise as depression, but it does seem to hint that direction sometimes.
2. More fertile? Sure, why not. Virility seems to be plenty high.
3. I don't get the gay men with older brothers thing. Is it saying that most men with older brothers and shorter index fingers are gay? I'm marginally queer, have older brothers, and shorter index fingers.
4. I scored considerably higher on the verbal, but I was always great at math in high school (just poor at the SAT math format).
5. Yes to the longer ring fingers, definitely no on the more agressiveness. Me no agressive.

Interesting. Of course these are only trends and nothing is 100% with those correlations.

As for the brother thing - I think what they found is that while there was an obvious trend for lesbians to have much longer ring fingers than index fingers, there was no such pattern among gay men, until you narrowed the field down to gay men with older brothers. Within that group, the odds were high that the guy would have much longer ring fingers.
