Ground invasion of Themyscira: in order.

May 13, 2006 20:32

Wave after wave of Scylla-8 mantanks clamber upon Themyscira, powerful pacification weapons their primary armament. The island is rapidly flooded with tear gas, smoke and the fog of war; visibility rapidly drops to near-nothing.

Certain of these armored soldiers, though, have different orders than mere invasion...

amazons, black knight one, wonder woman, war, green lantern john stewart, lex luthor, artemis

Over their mikes:

All captains: initiate pulse debilitator arrays.

As the mantanks march forward, what look like flashing sirens rise from the tops of their armor, and start flashing a sequence, a very specific sequence, brightly and in unison.

The sequence causes spasms in human eyes, causing sharp pain and disorientation. No long-term effects have been reported. At least not officially, anyway.

He had been at Titans Tower yesterday, now he's 30,000 feet over the Water in a stolen SR-71. It's amazing with the influx of technology LexCorp has provided the US Military, how little they care for obsolete equipment. Slater avoided most of the security by towing the plane to the run way with a small truck as guards sat in a booth watching the NBA tournament. With no lights and few people paying attention, the Control Tower had 15 seconds to repond to the sudden burst of flame from the double jet engines. Slater screamed across the runway until it had taken off the ground. He hit the throttle to full and the plane hung in mid air for a moment before a loud blast propels it forward. One faked plane crash and two pre-planned fuel stops provides a safe escape. All provided by a section of Checkmate sympathic to the Themysciran cause, or at least anti-Luthor. In time, Slater is in range of the Themyscrian conflict ( ... )

John Stewart is fast on his way back to Themyscira, having been duped by Luthor's peace overtures... and suddenly, there's this guy he doesn't know on the JLA frequency...

"Acknowledged, Black Knight One," comes the response, barked. "How did you get this frequency?"

He knows the GLs are in trouble, but he doesn't have a full sitrep of the war front...

Away from the main thrust of the battle, a small unit of mantanks advances more cautiously than most.

A warband of half a dozen Amazons, led by Artemis, spies them.

Sisters! To battle!

The squad's leader nods inside his suit and hits his comm.

They'll do. Switch to the special loads.

The automatic cannons click out of the mantanks' arms, and start firing - rapidly - what appear to be small pellets.

Artemis dodges easily, but her sisters all get hit by the pellets - which rapidly reveal themselves as contact-tranquilizers as the Amazons collapse, one by one.

She leaps forward, evading their arc of fire, and smashes her fist directly through the faceplate of a mantank, effortlessly snapping the pilot's neck.

Dogs! Face me like the men you claim to be!

John's hovering over the general area of this Black Knight's device, trying to protect it as well as the both of them... but dammit if he isn't thrown for a loop by all of this, and he's got no idea where the rest of his friends are.

So, quietly, he activates a commlink.

"Let me hear your voice when you can, Diana..."

Let me know you're still alive.

"Still here John." There are sounds of fighting in the background.

"Still with you."

That's all he needed.

"And I'm still with you."

*ZZAP*

On the coastline, a small submersible emerges.

Bell Jar has arrived.

The mantanks herd the unconscious Amazons into the submersible quickly and smoothly, where they're strapped into sedation beds. Just as smoothly, the crew transfers out a half dozen burned and mutilated female corpses.

Finally, the job is done, and the mantank operators stand away from the submersible. Their captain, out of his tank pauses as one of the soldiers addresses him. "Sir, how are we going to account for the bodies when we were using pacification armaments?"

He shrugs.

Weapons malfunction, corporal.

As he boards the submersible, he reaches into his pocket and pushes a switch on a small transmitter. As the submersible descends into the deeps, the remaining mantanks explode powerfully.

No witnesses.
