Gotham Gala, Part Three, Observations at a Party

Jul 01, 2005 20:52

The gala continues to unfold, a glorious lobster dinner giving way to more dancing and small talk. Many checks have been signed over to charity. Many political and business deals have been brokered, over drinks. Bono has been cajoled into singing "With or Without You" with the band. Jeff would've found "Bloody Sunday" more appropriate, but then, he ( Read more... )

After Sue's return from the ladies room, she presses a bit of polite flesh and talks about books and babies with some of the other women. Still, her main focus is on an old friend. Batman is either saving her and Ted like a cheesecake at that time of the month, or he's finally too distracted to pursue a big shiny lead. either answer is bad...extremely bad. And she knows if he's keeping the discussion with the man she strongly suspects is family very much in public, then somethings really, really wrong. She watches for a sign of a lean in or some simple code - like he would do with Dick. Nothing.

If he gets involved later, she and Ted are screwed. Time to take the battle to the enemy.

And...hope against hope that the "enemy," has a heart attached to his ears and that they are working tonight.

Bruce has to keep a high profile at galas like these. What choice does he have? Since birth he's been in the spotlight; since the murders, the spotlight has glared. So he does what he can to make things easier because, contrary to how he appears, sometimes being the Crown Prince of Gotham isn't a simple chore. Not when his public life and the most private aspect of his personal life clash.

Which is precisely what Sue's trying to make happen.

Will this night never end? Bruce snags a drink - water, but who cares? - and gives Sue a broad grin. "Now serving number 42. What can an old guy like me do for a beautiful woman like you, Mrs. Dibny?"

"Just this, and I'll make it quick." She promises. Good, so long as he keep being charming, he won't try anything. It's when he loses the charm.

"It's a stupid therapy thing," she matches his light mood. "I'm going around, fixing things that need to get fixed. Apologizing for things-.." An outsider would be thinking AA. It goes by initials all right...Better that minor type of eyebrow raising then other things. "And I seem to recall a social gathering that went pretty badly. I had to skip out due to my 'problem,' and here I am back in your city at your company's party." She laughs, but there's no humor in it. "I'm sorry okay. It wasn't the way I would have liked to have things happen but I wasn't really in a good position-" she waves a hand. "And I'm here over the next few days to apologize to a lot of people," the emphasis is subtle, but he can handle it. "Ted's helping. Anyway, this is stupid and 7 years overdue, but, I'm sorry ( ... )

"Don't worry, Mrs. Dibny," Bruce calls, his smile an unshaken thing, "Heck, I'm not even sure what you're talking about. My memory's not what it used to be." A laugh punctuates that statement. "I'm sure you have a lot of people giving you a hand, Mr. Kord first and foremost. So anyways, good luck, OK?"

He turns away, putting an end to that conversation and looking for a diversion.

Or an exit.
