For Want of a Boil

I like cooking, but I have this one peeve.

Why is it that while I can cook trout amandine and all sorts of other foods, including steak, properly and think of myself as a decent cook, I can't for the life of me boil an egg *just right*???

And please, no cracks about the timing of it all and that stuff. (Yes, the puns were deliberate!)
