I dreamed last night that I got a second job as a touring band photographer, but because I was new, I was only allowed to take pictures of the techs setting up. Have you taken a look at the Getty's Art & Architecture Thesaurus? It has a nice (if very deep) faceted structure with something like 34,000 separate concepts (and 100,000+ terms), and has wonderful historical coverage. You might be able to break a branch of facets off of it for your project. I've found it to be pretty damned useful. Alternately, you might be able to use some components of the VRA Core 4.0.
