Title: How Much I Need You Is How Much I Love You
Henry loved playing the violin but it seems like he was cursed because whenever he plays the violin, the people who would listen to it falls asleep. Henry had always wanted to perform on stage. He had always wanted to be in an orchestra. He had always wanted to be in a band that plays classical music in classy and expensive restaurants. But he can’t do all those things because the sound of his violin makes people fall asleep even his own dog would fall asleep after hearing him playing the violin.
Usually Henry would play the violin whenever he got depressed. But there are times that the violin itself was the reason for his depression and frustrations. Like what’s the point of playing the violin skillfully when there’s nobody that would listen to him or watch him play? Those kind of thoughts run through his head as he was tempted to smash his violin against the wall.
One time Henry had a really bad day. Tears kept on running down on his cheeks as he played the violin in an alley late at night so nobody would be able to listen to it or rather fall asleep from listening to it. But even playing the violin didn’t comfort him, out of anger and frustrations, he tried to smash his violin against the wall.
Just when the violin almost hit the wall, a person came in between the violin and the wall. The unknown person got hit by the violin really badly. “Oh my gawd!!! I’m so sorry!!!” Henry left his violin on the floor as he approached the person that got hit. “Are you okay? Where does it hurt?”
From the person’s facial expression, it must have really hurt. He was also clutching his arm, which got the received the impact from the violin. “I knew you were angry but I didn’t expect that you had a lot of anger. That hit was really strong.”
“You should have thought of that before suddenly showing up. What were trying to do?!?!”
“I didn’t want you to regret breaking the violin.”
Henry widened his eyes and looked for his violin, which was left lying on the ground. He picked up his violin and tried to look for scratches and any other deformities. Luckily, there was none. Honestly, he really loved his violin but sometimes, those negative feelings would be overwhelming that he wouldn’t be able to think straight and all of his anger would go straight towards the violin. He had no other outlet besides his violin.
“You’re right. Thank you.” Henry said sincerely as he placed the violin back in the case. “And I’m sorry. My house is just near here. Let’s go there so I could offer you some ice for your injury. I’m sure there would be a bruise forming.”
“If your house is just near here, then why are you playing here in the alley instead of just in your house?” The person asked as he walked beside Henry towards the house.
“Because whenever I play the violin, people would fall asleep. If I play the violin in my house, my brother might fall asleep then he wouldn’t be able to study properly for his exam tomorrow. My mom might not finish washing the dishes. My father might not be able to watch his favorite show.”
“How could people fall asleep with your amazing violin skills? Especially when you were angry, the way you played became really fast and complicated. I could only stare and go like ‘wow’! That’s why I didn’t want you to break the violin because it looked really expensive and it might take a while for you to get it fixed or buy a new one and I really wanted to hear you playing it again.” The person had the habit to talk without looking at the person he was talking to so when he finished talking, he realized that Henry had already stopped walking.
Henry was a few steps behind. He was simply staring at the unknown person with an unbelievable expression. “You heard me play the violin?”
“Of course, I did! I’m not deaf.”
“You know, I wasn’t joking when I said that people would fall asleep whenever I play the violin. It really happens like a curse…like how Jigglypuff sings…hey, I’m serious!!!” Henry said when the unknown person started to laugh.
“I was only laughing because you mentioned Jigglypuff.”
“Even animals falls asleep when I play the violin.” Henry pouted.
“Really?” The unknown person looked around and saw a stray cat. “There’s a stray cat. If you play your violin and it falls asleep, then I’ll believe what you said.”
Henry took out his violin and started playing. He was surprised to see that the cat wasn’t falling asleep at all. “That’s strange. Why isn’t it sleeping?” He decided to just think about it later. Right now, the unknown person needs the ice for his bruise so they hurriedly went to the house. In the house, Henry started to play again.
His parents and his brother went to the kitchen and saw Henry playing for the first time. They were actually able to listen to the whole thing. The fact that they didn’t fall asleep really surprised Henry. His parents and his brother praised Henry for the first time. Henry was happy to hear this. He thought that the curse must be gone or something. He thanked the unknown person again before the person left.
The next day Henry played his violin again early in the morning. It resulted to the family members falling asleep again. “How could this be? Why is it back to the way it was again? Was yesterday just some sort of miracle day?!?!” Henry became depressed again. He didn’t go to school. He stayed at the alley, where he frequently hides, with his violin and cried all day.
“Wake up.” Henry felt his shoulder being shaken lightly. He woke up and saw the familiar face of the person he met yesterday. He was still sitting in the alley. He must have fallen asleep while crying too much. “Looks like you really had a bad day.” The stranger sat beside Henry. “What’s wrong?”
“I thought the curse stopped because yesterday the cat and my family didn’t fall asleep while I played the violin but today…they fell asleep.” Henry looked at his violin. He wondered why he would have to keep on playing the violin when it hurts him a lot. Perhaps, it’s because what he loves so much. No matter how it hurts, his love for the violin won’t stop him from playing it.
“I think I have an idea.” The person helped Henry stand up and picked up the violin. “I know a person who might have some answers to your problems.” Later they ended up in a fortune teller’s tent. Henry doesn’t really believe in those stuff but he was willing to try. Besides, the stranger was playing it for him.
“You say people and animals fall asleep when you play the violin.” Henry nodded. “It probably had something to do with the fact that you are related to the God Somnus.” Henry’s eyes widened. Now, how could he be related to a god. “You are just one of his descendents that got his ability to make people fall asleep. However, you can’t seem to control your power as it always flows out whenever you play your beloved violin.”
“So how do I stop it?” Henry doesn’t care whether him being a descendent of a god is true or not. He just wants to know how to stop this ability that he called curse.
“Your friend.” The fortune teller looked at the stranger sitting beside Henry. “He seems to have the ability to counteract your ability. Therefore, whenever your friend is around, the people and animals that will hear you play the violin won’t fall asleep.”
Henry believe this because of the events that happened yesterday. After the so called fortune telling, they decided to walk back to Henry house in silence. “Um, I believe we don’t know each other’s names? I’m Henry and you are?”
“Donghae.”
“Why do you always seem to walk around at night?”
“There was one time I was asked to buy something in a convenient store. I passed by the alley which you always seem to be at. I heard you playing the violin. I’ve been listening to you play the violin for a few nights already.”
Henry was surprised to hear this and in a way, he felt really happy. “You know, you’re the first person to really listen to me play the violin.”
“It makes me glad that I have the ability to counteract your sleeping ability. I felt bad for the people who would fall asleep during your performance. You’re really great, you know!!!!”
Besides from his family who praised and complimented him for the first time yesterday, Donghae was the second person to praise him for his skills. “Will it be too much of a burden for you if I ask you to attend to my violin performances?”
“No. I’d love to hear and watch you play anytime, anywhere.”
In a span of few months, everything that Henry wished and wanted to happen has finally happened. He was able to have his violin recitals. He was able to join the orchestra. He was able to have a part time job in a classy restaurant as a violinist in a band. Donghae had always been with him, watching him, listening to him play.
Donghae never missed any of Henry’s performances but there are times when he was almost late and Henry would get angry at him for that. There was a time when Donghae was almost late and he had also brought his friend, Ryeowook, who remained silent as Henry scolded Donghae for almost being late.
After Henry’s performance, Donghae and Ryeowook waited for Henry outside the building. They were having a private conversation about Henry.
“It’s true that he’s a great violinist but other than that, he doesn’t seem to be such a great person. He wasn’t even thankful that you’ve been helping him all this time. He even has the nerve to get angry when you’re almost late. Doesn’t he realize that you have your own life too? He had taken a lot of time from you and kept you away from the things and people you’ve always spend time with.” Because Ryeowook had witnessed Henry scolding Donghae, he didn’t like Henry right away.
They didn’t realize that Henry wasn’t actually far away and had heard everything that Ryeowook said. Henry realized what he had done and because of shame and guilt, he couldn’t find himself to approach them. Instead, he went back to his house by his own.
Donghae couldn’t think of a reply because it was true. Henry haven’t done anything for him while he had sacrificed a lot for Henry already. Could they even be called friends? When they met, Henry was friendly but recently, Donghae had become busy and had a hard time managing with his time so he’s always almost late for Henry’s performance. Because of that, Henry had been angry with him lately. Henry would only contact him to tell him when his performance would be. Donghae would only compliment or praise Henry after the performance and walk him home. When they happen to see each other in coincidence, they just greet each other with a simple hi or hello. There was really nothing to be called as friendship. They were more like just acquaintances.
“I don’t know why I’m doing this for him, Ryeowook but I know that it’s not pity.”
“Of course, it’s not. If it’s just pity then you would have stopped doing this a long time ago. We’ve been close friends for a long time, Donghae. There are times that I know you better than you know yourself and this is just one of those times. I know the reason why you’ve been doing this.”
“Why?”
“Because you’ve fallen for him.”
Donghae became worried when Henry didn’t show up but then, Henry had texted him that he already got home and not to worry anymore. Then a month passed by, Henry didn’t contact him at all. He was starting to worry again if something might have happened to Henry. He tried texting or calling Henry but there was no reply. He tried visiting the alley but there was no Henry in sight. His last option was to visit Henry’s house. Henry opened the door and was surprised to see Donghae standing there.
“You haven’t contacted me for a month. I was getting worried that something bad might have happened to you.” Donghae said.
“I’ve been fine.” Henry regained his composure.
“Didn’t you have any performances this past month?”
“No. I haven’t been playing at all.”
“Why?”
“I just don’t feel like it.”
“You’re lying.”
“I even sold my violin.”
“What?!?! How could you?!?! You love the violin!!!”
“There’s no point in playing if people would just fall asleep.”
“Isn’t that what I’m here for? I could keep those people awake so they could listen to you.”
“But you can’t be with me forever. You can’t always stay by my side. You have your own life too. Even if I want to go abroad to master and improve my skills and to become famous, I can’t just drag you all the way there. At some point, I’m going to have to stop playing the violin anyway so I just decided that I should stop now.”
Donghae didn’t know why he suddenly felt angry. “I’m not going to allow you to just stop playing the violin when I’ve sacrificed too much for you already. Why do you think I won’t go all the way? If you want to go abroad, then heck, I’ll go with you too!!! I don’t even know why you’re suddenly starting to consider my life when you’ve been just plain selfish and greedy about your violin and performances.”
Henry was touched because of the sacrifices Donghae had made and more sacrifices that Donghae was willing to make for him in the future. Donghae haven’t been attending dance practices. He hadn’t been playing soccer. He hadn’t been clubbing with his friends. Most of his time went to Henry, who he couldn’t even consider as a friend. That hurt Henry. Because Donghae doesn’t consider them as friends and the fact, that Donghae straight out told him that he was selfish and greedy. But it was true though. “I’m sorry.” That was all Henry could say as he broke down to tears.
It’s a good thing that when Henry’s parents came, Henry had already stopped from crying. They did sense that there was something going on between Henry and Donghae. That must have been the reason why they asked Henry and Donghae to give their dog a bubble bath.
“Did you really sold out your violin?” Donghae asked while he was placing shampoo on the dog. He was actually the one doing most of the bathing. Henry was just there to play with the rubber duck and the dog.
“No.” Henry replied in a soft tone. “After the last performance, I heard what Ryeowook said. I felt bad about it so I went home by myself. I couldn’t bring myself to ask you to come to another performance so I didn’t perform. I haven’t touched my violin at all.”
“So you didn’t stay and listen to the entire conversation?”
“No.”
Donghae took out the dog from the tub and wiped it with the towel. Then he shielded himself and Henry with the towel and the dog shook his body from the remaining water on his fur. Then the dog happily went on his way to play outside.
“Um…Hae, it’s safe to put down the towel now.”
“Not yet. Your parents or brother might see us.”
Henry was confused. So what if his parents will see them…?…Oh. He finally understood when Donghae’s lips landed on his. Then Donghae threw the towel on Henry. When Henry removed the towel from his face, Donghae was already out of sight and out of the house. (A/N: He ran away very fast!!!…out of embarrassment? XD)
The next day, Henry made a call to Donghae. “I heard you’ve entered a group dance contest this Saturday.”
“Yeah. Do you have a performance on that day? I could just back out.”
“Wouldn’t your teammates be mad at you for backing out?”
“It won’t be the first time that it’ll happen. They just got more understanding each time it happens.”
Henry felt guilty again. He knew that it was because he needed Donghae’s presence during his performances that Donghae had to back out some of the dance contests or performances that he entered. “Well, I don’t have a performance this Saturday.”
“Oh. Then why did you call?” Donghae was really curious now. Henry never called him just for the sake of having a conversation. Henry always called to tell him the time, date and place of the upcoming performance.
“I just wanted to ask…if I could come and watch your performance?”
Donghae almost dropped his cellphone because of too much shock. On the day of the performance, although he was expecting that Henry would come, he was still pretty much shock to see that Henry really did come. “Wow…you’re really here.” Donghae stared at Henry in awe.
“I was almost late. You’re not going to scold me, are you?” Henry asked nervously. After all, he had always scolded Donghae for being almost late so Donghae might want to have revenge after all those times.
“No. I’m just really happy that you’re here.” Donghae said as he enveloped Henry in a hug. “I’ll see you after the performance.”
“Wait…” Henry suddenly leaned forward and placed a kiss on Donghae’s cheek. “Good luck.”
Donghae just stared at Henry, who was blushing furiously, in shock and pleasant surprise. He’s really getting a lot of shock lately but he snapped out of his when his teammate called him over. Donghae walked over to his teammate in daze. “Hae, I know that you’re happy that Henry is here and all but SNAP OUT OF IT!!! If you ruin the dance later on, I’m so killing you!!!” That came from the leader of their dance team.
After all the time they spent together, Henry never knew that Donghae could dance so skillfully. Later on, Donghae’s group was announced as the winner of the contest so Donghae approached Henry happily when everything was over. “Hae, I wish I could stay and celebrate with your team’s victory party but it’s my brother’s birthday too so…”
“That’s okay! I’ll just send you home.”
“No, you don’t really have to…”
“But I want to!!! I always walk you home after the performance.”
“But it’s not even my performance.”
“Let’s just stop arguing. I’ll walk you home and that’s final.” Donghae held Henry’s hand as they walked on the streets. Although they had always been walking home together, it was the first time that they held hands while walking.
“Hae, why are you being so nice to me? I haven’t even done anything for you after all this time.”
“But you came to my dance performance today and that already means a lot.”
“It’s nothing compared to how many times you had to attend to my violin performances and back out from your own performances or whatever it is that you had to do just so you could attend to my violin performances. You always make sure I arrive home safely after performances.”
“Why do you think a person would do all those stuff for?”
Henry stayed silent for a moment and thought for a while. “Because you like me?” He said softly, shyly and unsurely.
Donghae stopped walking and stood in front of Henry. He took Henry’s hand and placed it on his chest so Henry could feel the beating of his heart. “Because I have a foolish heart that couldn’t stop itself from falling for you. It doesn’t even care if you feel the same way or not. It just doesn’t want to stop from loving you.”
At that time, Henry didn’t feel the same. At least that’s what he thought. But they had progressed from good luck kisses to goodnight kisses to make-out sessions. After a few months, he finally stopped denying his feelings.
“Hae, you know how much I need you right?”
“Yeah.”
“Then you should know by now how much I love you.”
Donghae stared at Henry in surprise. “Do you really mean that?”
“Do you think I would just go making-out with people that I don’t like?”
“You were making-out with other people?”
“No. It was just some sort of example. You’re the only person who got to taste me.”
“Good. Let’s make sure that it would always stay that way.”
Then another making-out session started. Henry never thought that he would be able to love someone as much as he loved his violin. But most of all, he never thought that he would be able to play the violin happily in front of an audience even after 5...10...15.…or 20 years that passed by. All of these wouldn’t have happened without his beloved Donghae.
THE END
