THE LARGE HADRON COLLIDER CAUSES BLACK HOLES AND WILL KILL US ALL DON'T YOU KNOW?
People are still predicting bookstores will go that route someday, if they don't just disappear altogether because we all get e-readers. (I guess nothing would ever go out of print, then, which could be good...)
I don't think they will all go out, because I really predict more power outages in our future. There is something comforting about holding a book in your hand as opposed to reading a screen or a Kindle. Books have a smell, they feel real, there is a history to them. I can hand a book to a friend.
But the thought of nothing ever being out of print is a good one. :D
More power outages? That sounds a little pessimistic. I think I'll wait until I've heard an opinion from someone with technical experience in the power industry before I adopt such a discouraging opinion.
(Much) cheaper e-readers, plus increasingly expensive paper books, may push more people to the portable devices. I've seen Amazon try out print-on-demand services, but that really seems to be growing slowly. (Interesting side note: the Dr. Horrible DVDs I bought for friends last year were sold thru Amazon's print-on-demand service. Yes, they do DVDs and other media too.)
For a while, critis were predicting illiteracy would grow. Fortunately, the growth of the internet, and now mobile communication devices, are making a certain level of literacy popular again. Tho evry1 may b spellg leik ths in futr.
I am going to have to give this another chance. I watched an episode but my hatred of Brannon Braga spilled over into seething rage and screaming. But a full try? Yes, you have convinced me.
I enjoy the show, but I'm not going to say it's the best show on TV. It's a convoluted mystery show, a la LOST, but at least it promises to tie up much of its mystery in the first season. I read the novel more out of curiosity, not because the show is so great that I need to consume everything associated with it.
I'm also planning to check out one or two of the novels "Legend of the Seeker" is based on, even though I don't think the show is that great, if that tells you anything.
