In Which John C. Wright Completely Loses his Shit over Legend of Korra

Dec 30, 2014 11:14

To the shock of nobody who’s ever read his blog, John C. Wright is Very Unhappy with the ending of The Legend of Korra, in which Korra and Asami, two female women characters of the same girlish gender, hold hands while walking off into the spirit world together. Wright links to an article which confirms the romantic relationship between these two ( Read more... )

The general reaction from the fansphere has - as far as I've been able to determine - a high-pitched squeal of SQUEEEEEEEE.

Even from people who've never watched the show. And the creators' discussion of why they did it (it was an organic decision rising out of the characters rather than an agenda-driven one, Mr. Wright...something a writer should totally understand and support), has raised even more glee because yes, characters (people) change and discover new things about themselves.... And that's ESPECIALLY important in a show that includes children in its viewership.

I think Mr. Wright might need to consider how delicate his heterosexuality is, if all THAT is what sends him into a froth, and why he feels the need to "protect the children" who (basing this on my own younger friends in fandom) seem to be quite fine with people changing, growing, and loving rather than hating....

I'll give that that's an impressive Phallic Idol of Sodomy, but I spent my impressionable years near this one, and actually worked inside the right testicle for a couple years.

Hmm, yeah, I've just purged my shelves of his books. (I'd not yet read any of them; they were on a very big TBR pile.) He has just crossed the OSC line for me.

Oh, he's supposed to be a writer -- a SF/F writer, no less? I looked him up, and didn't see anything I've ever spotted on the shelves in a convention dealer room.

I don't think we even need to go there. I mean, if he was a bestselling author with books flying off the shelves, that wouldn't make his rant any less odious.

Actually, I was thinking about it from a different direction -- that being (supposedly) a writer doesn't give his opinions any more weight than they would have coming from J. Random Troll. But you're right, it was snide and probably would have been better left unsaid.

How dare people write what they want to in their own fictional works? What a bizarre argument for a writer to make.

I love that video. So much joy.

Someday I want to write something that inspires that level of happiness and excitement.
